If a small market like Florida will do it, I think it's not as big of a deal as most think. It's only two years.

Florida took half of Versteegs salary ($2.2M)... if Vancouver took $2.2M of Keslers salary, then the Hawks can make it work if Leddy or Shaw are part of the deal. Even if they didn't take $2.2M, they would be at around $70M with 20 guys if someone between $2-3M were involved in the deal.

It's not a big deal until next season when Kane and Toews have new contracts (if re-signed). They don't have to trade a big contract... anyone with $2-3M could be gone (Shaw, Leddy) and the Hawks would be fine.

All I'm saying is, for the sake of the rumor, if this was going to happen... the worst case scenario for the Canucks is that they have to retain some of Keslers salary. Could be 500K, 1M, or 2M. I don't know. It doesn't have to happen, but I'm sure Stan would push for that for some flexibility, and on the Canucks side, I'm not sure why they wouldn't if Stan were to throw them an extra bone.

If the Hawks absolutely have to shed some space, there are other options, such as trading Versteeg (not sure the Canucks would want him, maybe they would do that over retaining salary, but I'm sure someone in the league would take him if the Canucks didn't). Morin, Raanta, and Smith shouldn't have too big of a bump in their salary (actually their cap hits would be lower, according to capgeeks RFA calculator, if that is accurate). For this year, it would work without giving up a big contract. Next year? That's what Stan is paid for.
