I think Q wants the young players to be able to play the way the team does and their role. Some guys, especially the rookie or 2nd year AHLers are coming from teams where they are top dog (Pirri, Morin). Some have a hard time accepting that role which I think is why Pirri was traded. Offensively he has some good skill, but the jock on him was he was lax in his own zone. In the NHL, unless you are supremely offensively talented (Kane, Crosby, Ovechkin) you're going to be expected to play both ways.
Shaw, Kruger, Leddy, Smith, Saad all have be able to adjust and play the role the team needed....and sometime their roles change like Saad as a offensive threat and Shaw going from 4th line to able to play 2nd C. Tons of other guys never accept their roles, and that's why the AHL are filled with guys who are scoring dynamos in juniors and minors, but can't crack a NHL team lineup.
