I'd rather hold on to Castro and hope he rebounds over that. The throw ins would be a lot to get all those guys I would think.

Not sure. Preller has been trying to get Gyorko out of there. It was not his signing. Actually he was Hoyers' draft choice so there is a connect going on. He is owed 4 mil next year. 6 in 17, 9 in 2918 and 13 in 29. with a 13 mil club option. About 32 mil on the hook. Castro is owed about 40+ mil. Then add in Max's expiring deal (4.25 milk contract) and Ross. 5.25 mil this year and 2 years of control.

The cash balances out for the most part. So it makes sense to give up some cost controlled youth. I wouldn't give up anything higher than a #20 prospect here. What they are buying is not all star caliber.

I would be fine with that assuming the minor leaguers were Villanueva types.

Vill makes alot of sense. He has no future with the Cubs and Middlebrooks flopped out. There is an opportunity to be had for him over there. Not to mention his D is rated pretty high at 3B. Playing in a park like that, that matters. Toss in a arm like Daury Torrez and call it a day.

You would be subtracting 2 and adding 3. Dropping Teagarden and Medina would cover the 25 man. 40 man cutting Jokisch, Mike Baxter, Christion Villanueva. Most logical ones.

I would think they would add Baez and move Herrera to AAA. Both are on the 40 man. Baez would get a shot at playing every day 2B while Jed would rotate around to give guys days off. That is the big need they are looking at right no. Russell and Bryant have not played full seasons. Not to mention Soler (even though he has been injured) Adding Will and Jed would give more days off. Baez would Cover SS with Jed at 2B. Pretty smart idea. But the main gain is 2 years on Ross. That would stabilize the rotation for 2016.

Well I was assuming Baez > 2B and Jedd/Alcantara to bench if you need a 40 man slot DFA'in Herrera.

Cubs starters are 3rd in fWAR for starters only behind the white sox and the nationals without Ross. They are 7th in ERA, 3rd in FIP, 4th in bb/9, 2nd in k/9.... all without Ross.

One less guy in the NL I guess. Have to imagine some high quality pitching is coming back with Reyes. Wonder if that lends itself to a cubs trade later on be it this deadline or offseason.

Best SS off the trade block just may help the Cubs if their truly looking to deal castro or Baez now for pitching ..
May not have to give up too much more with them to get guy they want. .

Also sets the market a bit for SS. Obviously we don't know what prospects are coming back but Reyes is still an OK SS at 32 so if they get some premium players back it gives you an idea of what Castro/Baez might be worth.

Castro was Toronto's #5 ranked prospect and mlb.com has a 50 grade on him so think Pierce Johnson level player. Seems a bit light here though there could still be another team out there as part of a 3 way deal.
