Jim Bowden at ESPN is floating the following trade possibility; Tyson Ross and Craig Kimbrel for Starlin Castro, Billy McKinney, Pierce Johnson and Carl Edwards Jr. My first thought was that it was a bit too much pitching depth to give up but damn that deal helps now and later for the Cubs. Of course then you'd have to pick up a second baseman that can hit or roll the dice with Baez, at least for this year.

Too much for my tastes. I don't love Kimbrel that much. Last year Castro for Ross straight up is probably a pretty close to fair trade. So giving up McKinney, Johnson and Edwards for Kimbrel seems pretty crazy to me.

That's an interesting notion. How do you figure? Toronto moves him in the offseason after going for it all this year?
Toronto flips him today for putching, which the Cards are deep in.

But the part that doesn't work is thst Toronto traded away their SS. So it is Colorado thst would be more likely to flip a SS.

Logically, it seems Tor would not flip him. But it involves Team Rabbit's Foot in St Louis, so I fear it

Starting to think with recent losing streak, Epstein going to srand pat now..

Teams probably looking for more then he willing to deal with questions marks in his young hitters now

Don't think the plan was ever to go big unless the market fit the price they were willing to pay. If you listen to what they've been saying it's largely been talking about bench players and lessor pitching rather than the big trade.

I think Ross is the only person we'll be in on. If we don't land him, I don't think we'll make a trade at all.

This is the kind of thinking I don't understand. There are no more question marks on these hitters than there were a week ago or a month ago. With very few exceptions this is what young hitters do and Theo and Jed know this. They were never going to make rental moves. Anything they were going to do or will will be more about the future than the now. I still think a big deal with San Diego is possible, if not quite likely. They are looking to move anyone and everyone to rebuild their farm system they decimated over the winter. The stumbling block appears to be Shields. They'll deal Ross, Kimbrel, Casner etc. but the other teams must take Shields and or Gyorko. From what I'm hearing the Cubs say yes to Gyorko but won't take Shields. If they can get Shields out of the mix something will get done on a large scale. If not be not be prepared to Welcome a fifth starter at a cheap price.

Well not sure it's any solace but they will make a trade. They have to because they have too many people to protect from the rule 5 draft in december. I suppose they could wait until the offseason but given how they've talked it makes as much sense to trade now as then. It's just that who they trade for isn't going to be a giant impact outside of something like the Ross trade that's been mentioned.

I mean think about the situation they are in. Unless you are trading away one of Soler, Russell, Castro, Bryant, or Rizzo you can't improve 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, and RF and even with Castro you could feasibly still play Baez at 2B. As for C/CF/LF, of players with 100 PAs for the cubs, Coghlan is 3rd on the team in OBP. Montero is 4th. Fowler is 6th and for what it's worth Deno is 5th. So, if they continue using Cogs/Deno in LF that's one of their best "players."

So, in terms of hitting the upgrade has to come from within with Soler/Castro/Russell playing better. As for pitching, their starting pitching has been great. They were third in fWAR last I checked. And while I could perhaps see them making an early play to add someone now rather than waiting and spending loads of money it's not a "must have" type situation.

Ultimately, I'm guessing they will probably nab a bench bat for the OF and send Baxter down. I could also see them adding a younger BP arm. They could really use a good young lefty. Russell has been decent this year but he is what he is which is a LOOGY and not really a impact BP piece. Wood has been decent as a reliever as well but with Jackson gone he's your long reliever too. Rondon, Grimm, Strop and Ramirez would appear to be "the future" of the pen going forward and are all righties. Motte, Medina, Soriano and Schlitter are both expendable and also righties. And Rosscup while having good numbers in the minors is possibly a bit raw still and he's really the only lefty of note high in the minors.

They'll pick up a 5th starter if they can't make a larger deal. They know they can't trot out likes of Dallas Beeler and some of the other bums they've pitched lately every 5th day. It leaves no room for any of the other 4 to have a poor outing and that's unrealistic as we just saw with Hendricks and Hammel.

3:05pm: The Nationals are nearing a deal to acquire closer Jonathan Papelbon from the Phillies, Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post reports on Twitter. Earlier today, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that there was a deal in the works, but both Jim Bowden and Jayson Stark of ESPN reported that there were hurdles to be cleared before a deal was struck. It would seem, based on Svrluga’s report, that those hurdles have been addressed or are nearly cleared.

Sort of ok with this.

I dont think theyll deal anyone of significant now

They will need to make some moves in off season
Especially figuring out who they want in Castro, Baez, Russell, probably even Alcantara as their 2B and SS.

I wrote that horribly wrong..

to clarify. ..

He probably pausing on deals with teams looking to get more then what he willing to give up , especially since now that the team is struggling on offense. .

If they started tge 2nd half hitting and winning, then theyd most likely would of considered make a significant trade or two.. like for papelbon and a better upgrade in rotation over a Ross or ian Kennedy type..

They do not have to do anything. Wada got 6 IP in his last game and looks ready to go again.

IMO other teams are going to have to make the Cubs do a deal vs the other way around. They are a year out from being legit so unless it is a chin dropper they ate better off holding.

Rule V will work itself out. They lose a guy and he makes it good for him.

I highly doubt anybody wants Castro. Unfortunately 5 managers and countless hitting coaches have already exasperated a seriously flawed player. In fact, he might be one of the worst offensive every day players in the majors. I believe his OBP Is .280, which quite frankly wouldn't even put him at the AAA level.

If we don't find a willing trade partner, I would seriously consider benching him and moving Addison Russell to SS. We can call up Baez to play 2B. I'd like to see Baez get another go of it this year to see if he can cut down on his K's.

Also I'd like to find room for Olt, who is murdering it right now. And we desperately need offense.
