It was on mlb.com this morning

saw 120 mil 6 years. 20 mil per. That would be a weak offer.

I personally would front load it 30 mil for the first 3 years. 25 mil year 4 20 mil year 5 and the last year 15 mil. It would help in retaining the team later down the road. 150 mil is a realistic number but it makes sense to get the bulk done while payroll is lower and the youth is cheap.

It's a starting point

He would have to extend to make it go through. Jed said they would not do 1 year rentals unless that guy was willing to extend. Still for buying 1 year of control the price would be less. I could see a deal with Almora centered with Vogelbach tossed in. Maybe a mid tier prospect arm like Blackburn.

I read they were already discussing players and yes part of the deal would be for him to agree to an extension. .

It says one of the nationals need is a 2nd basemen, so possibly Alcantara could be involved

The Cubs are engaged with discussions with the Nationals to acquire right-handed starter Jordan Zimmermann, reports Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. Talks are serious enough that the sides have exchanged names that would be involved, with at least one top young middle infielder likely to be part of the package.

Not sure if Alcantara is concidered a top MI tough. I would call him #4 after Castro, Baez and Russell. You would have to thing it would start with Russell then move down to Baez. If it went to Alcantara then the add ins would have higher value. Much higher value...like Edwards value.

Saw that too. He would be a alternate to Hammel. About the same production IMO.

I'd take Masterson because I doubt Hammel would comeback on another 1-year deal. That then gives the Cubs flexibility entering FA next year as Masterson/Wada would be gone. Then the Cubs would have just Arrieta/Hendricks/ ??? moving forward. Edwards could maybe come up then, and make way for a potential addition next winter

Would you trade Baez before Russell? Russell seems to be the type of hitter Theo likes. ???

I would trade Baez as the centerpiece for Jordan Zimmerman in a New York minute. The Cubs would be far better off with hitters like Bryant, Soler, Rizzo, Castro and Russell leading the team, and they would be far better off with Zimmerman as part of the top of the rotation.

Throw a Lester, Shields or even a Liriano or someone like that and maybe Russell Martin, and that would be a great offseason even if Baez and other prospects were no longer on the team.

Its like this, you can trade Baez and he turns out to become nothing and the Cubs sold at the right time. The other way is he puts it together and you missed out on the next generational hitter. Life choices.

True. Though he has so much raw power, I don't see (yet) the ability to adjust to major league pitching. He may never get it. I would much rather roll the dice with the others and take my chances that Jordan Zimmerman will be the better investment since the Cubs have plenty of other talent besides Baez.

If I have Bryant, Castro, Rizzo, Soler, and Alcantara now, with Russell, Schwarber, Vogelbach and McKinney in the minors, I am cool with that if I receive a proven TOR pitcher in return.

It isn't as if the Cubs couldn't sign another player to take Baez's place later on down the line.

The issue is I think Washington sees it more like Castro, Russell, Baez in terms of what they want for Zimmerman. If Baez would have showed some adjustment I think he moves ahead of Castro. Could be a blessing or a curse for the Cubs that he didn't adjust. We'll know pretty quick when the season starts.

Nah, that's what Philly thinks they can get for Hamels and it's unrealistic even there. Understand the asking though. Zimmerman is a rental even if you consider the Cubs can extend him. If they deal him they won't get nearly that. Still this rumor smelled like bs from minute one. First word leaks that Boston has made an offer to Lester and then Gordon Wittenmeyer, he of the Sun Times weird Cubs agenda, reports this. Then it gets shot down by every single other Cubs reporter. The Cubs played this jamoke to light a fire under Lester. Kind of brilliant actually.
