Sources confirm #Cubs’ pursuit of #Rangers’ Hamels, as first reported by @Joelsherman1. Along with low acquisition cost, this would be CHC’s rationale:

Hamels at home this season: 6.41 ERA, 16 HRs, 59 IP.

Hamels on road: 2.93 ERA, 7 HRs, 55.1 IP.
Assuming he takes Chatwood spot in rotation...
Cubs would roll with 4 lefties in rotation

Makes me wonder if they'll go with a Chatwood Montgomery Combo for the 5th spot, 3 innings each..lol

Just heard from Kaplan, whom i trust more then others when it comes to cubs news..

Says he "thinks" by this weekend, the Cubs will get Hamel for 2 secondary prospects with the 4 mil of the 14+ owed..

Not sure if it's related but i thought i saw earlier today Lacy was supposed to start for MB. Manuel Rondon is starting instead. Also heard DJ Wilson came off the DL but isn't starting. Those two would likely constitute lower level prospects though it could just be coincidence.

FWIW, I really hope Lacy isn't in a trade. Really like him.

I was thinking that Hamles was a potential match.

I think he has 8 mil due this year with 20 mil (6 mil buy out) I could see them splitting this years costs.

It could very likely be related. Wilson is a speed guy and with Happ and Almora young he has no future here anyways. Lacy for some reason is not getting in any rankings anywhere. It is not like the Cubs are stacked either. We have talked about it and honestly he is not a huge loss...yet. Time will tell. If it happens.

But I think it will. This makes sense. Get a play off ready arm that takes over now. I just don't see Chatwood as a starting option any more.

Now if they pick the option or not? Well not here or now but not unlikely. They would have to move Chatwood out first though and Cole at the back stabilizes the rotation. I'm not sure what next year is looking like cap wise yet.

They do get Hamel and assuming it to replace Chatwood in the rotation, what do they do with Chatwood?
Bullpen ? If so, who gets booted from pen , Butler?

Makes you wonder if they try and unload him or just release him and just eat the money either way

Chatwood: 12.5 mil/12.5 mil/13 mil. that is 26 mil to eat. I doubt they would do that. He would be a change of scenery candidate and take back a gross contract in return.

2019 they have 131 mil on the books. This year hurt Bryant. I see 15 mil vs 20 mil.

Off contract: Wilson, Chavez, Strop has a 500k buy out. Most are in arb still.

Yu from 25 to 20 mil. Him and Bryant wash. Q has a option. Pretty sure they pick it. They could flip him also if they decide to retain Cole and flip Q for something. Something to mill over.

The Cubs have a deal in place to acquire Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels, according to MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi, "pending exchange of medical information."

In his 13th big league season, Hamels has gone 5-9 with a 4.72 ERA in 20 starts. He is making $23.5 million this season and the club holds a $20 million option for next year with a $6 million buyout.

The Cubs and Rangers are in agreement on a trade that will send Cole Hamels from Texas to Chicago, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News (via Twitter). Multiple reports had indicated that the two sides were making progress on a deal, as was first indicated by Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports adds the ever-important caveat that the trade is pending medical reviews (Twitter link).

Earlier today, Sherman reported that the Cubs were willing to take on about $4MM of the roughly $14MM still owed to Hamels ($7.98MM of his $22.5MM salary plus at least a $6MM buyout on next season’s $20MM club option). Sherman and others have suggested that Chicago will send lower-level prospects to Texas in return, and The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney had pointed out that Class-A Advanced right-hander Rollie Lacy was scratched from tonight’s start for Chicago’s Myrtle Beach affiliate, though it’s not yet clear if he’s headed to the Rangers as part of the return for Hamels.

The 34-year-old Hamels isn’t the ace that he once was, and he’s had his share of struggles in 2018 — albeit nearly all of them coming at his homer-happy home stadium in Arlington. Hamels is surrendering home runs at a career-worst rate, but it’s somewhat telling that 16 of the 23 round-trippers he’s yielded have come at Globe Life Park. Hamels has a 6.41 ERA, a 6.16 FIP and a 4.49 xFIP when pitching at home this season but a 2.93 ERA, 4.17 FIP and 3.83 xFIP on the road.

Early in the season, there was some concern over a decline in Hamels’ velocity, but he’s regained nearly all of the lost zip on his heater — an encouraging sign for he Cubs, who’ll hope that a move to the National League and a more pitcher-friendly stadium will improve Hamels’ results. Starting pitching wasn’t supposed to be a significant concern for Chicago after spending a combined $164MM to sign right-handers Yu Darvish and Tyler Chatwood this offseason. Unfortunately for Theo Epstein & Co., Darvish has been hampered by triceps injuries throughout the season, while Chatwood has alarmingly walked more hitters than any pitcher in baseball.

It’s not clear exactly how Hamels will fit into the Chicago rotation, but he’ll surely be guaranteed a starting job. Mike Montgomery has stepped up beautifully with Darvish on the disabled list and may very well have forced Chicago’s hand in keeping him in the rotation. Then again, Montgomery has also been effective as a reliever and could help to strengthen the bullpen if it’s him, not Chatwood, who is dropped to a relief role. Alternatively, the Cubs could simply look to deploy a six-man rotation consisting of Jon Lester, Jose Quintana, Kyle Hendricks, Hamels, Montgomery and Chatwood — though they’d certainly need to shuffle that arrangement when Darvish returns from the disabled list.

Be funny of the SP traded, assuming Mets hang onto DeGrom.

Hamel ends up having the best 2nd half and helps the cubs more then the others helped their new team

Hamel last start was Monday..
with off day Monday for Cubs, guessing he will make his cubs debut on either Tuesday or Wednesday in Pittsburgh, depending if they want to give Lester an extra day off...

That'll give him an extra couple days to settle in with his new team...

0:30pm: Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tweets that the Rangers will receive two pitchers for Hamels in addition to the PTBNL. Lacy will indeed head to the Rangers, though Wilson hears that the second pitcher is “not a prospect.” As he notes, it’s unclear whether that means the Cubs are sending a Major League player or if that’s merely a means of indicating the pitcher to be of low upside.

Rangers most likely know the Cubs system pretty well. They targeted Lacy and Thomas who are way better than they were respected.

The pitcher non prospect bit is puzzling though. I would guess Swarmer. He was not ranked either but his numbers are pretty crazy also. He pitched tonight so that might be the delay.

Anyone else would have to be a complete unknown.

Or Mills. He kinda makes sense as he could be a adjustment period starter while they are rebuilding.

Wont be Swarmer. If he were the guy he wouldn't have started tonight like they did with Lacy.

Maybe they wanted to scout that start as part of the deal. His SO’s were stable after the promote but his ERA and B.B. up ticked and I could see if they wanted to see if he was still adjusting or hitting a plateau. He is a bit older like Rucker so there is concern with every hick up.

On another one: Cubs would love Tsng. Mills also. To me it would make no sense for Tex as they can get scrap heap cheap.

Other than that no one really stands out as a sleeper type.

You don't wait until you're making a trade to scout someone. Plus, it's entirely possible Swarmer could have got hurt in the start. You aren't throwing away a nearly complete trade just to get a last minute look on a guy.

11:00pm: Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News tweets that the Rangers have said there won’t be any formal announcement made this evening. That said, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan tweets that Hamels has cleaned out his locker and left the team, so he’s seemingly already on his way to join the Cubs.

I would rather they kept Swarmer. But he follows a trend that the Rangers were targeting the best performers. IMO all 3 are being snubbed
