From Keith Law:

The Cubs are sellers for the first time in years, and traded Andrew Chafin to the A’s for outfielder Greg Deichmann and right-hander Daniel Palencia. Palencia is a great story — he signed at age 20 as a free agent in Venezuela, far older than most players are when they sign as international free agents, because his velocity came much later. The A’s had seen him at 16, but he didn’t have enough present stuff to merit signing him; Oakland’s lead scout in Venezuela, Argenis Paez, stayed in contact with the kid and eventually signed him when the projection turned into reality. Palencia has been up to 99 mph in his pro debut this year with the makings of two secondary pitches, so there’s a slight chance he can develop into a starter, and there’s real upside for him as a reliever. Deichmann is 26, and was Oakland’s No. 9 prospect coming into the year; I had him pegged as a power hitter who’d walk and strike out a lot, but to his credit, he’s shown better contact skills (without much power so far) in Triple A. He’s shown the ability to hit for average, and the power is still in there, so I like the odds of him combining it all and becoming at least an everyday corner outfielder, with more offensive upside.

From Patrick Mooney:

It will still be a jolt when it finally happens. The sentimentality is understandable for Rizzo’s parents, John and Laurie, who are regulars in the 1914 Club whenever they visit their son in Chicago. With Red Sox rumors swirling, the Rizzos were spotted at Wrigley Field during this final homestand before Friday’s trade deadline. Stadium workers noticed how John thanked employees for taking care of his family over the years, an observation that a Cubs fan, Staci Heaton, also shared on her Twitter account late Tuesday night. The Rizzos were back in the 1914 seats for Wednesday’s game.

Like I said Palencia was the target and Deichmann the throw in for Chafin. No one wants a soon to be 27 year old that hasn't had one AB in the MLB especially when he has been in the A's system that relies on churn and burn of young players on cheap contracts. If he couldn't make it with the A's, he's just AAAA fodder at this point.

I'd think the cubs would move some guys today so they aren't working on 5 or 6 trades on deadline day

Just wondering with some of the trades already being made, will the Cubs take "whatever they can get" for their rental players or hold on and wait until after season? Could be wait if they don't get what they want in exchange. What they do need is pitching, contact (OBP/BA) and power hitters (who don't strike out 40% of their AB's). Epstein and Hoyer made this cupboard bare by their trades to get to 1 WS and win it; great, however, they failed to see that this team was "satisfied" with ONE, the players spent too much time relishing their WS win and the deep seated hunger to win was no longer there along with some talent and play deficiencies. Now they have a huge contingent of rentals ( 1yr and FA) who will be gone, should be gone or likely gone. They have a terrible defense, regulars who cannot get OB or hit when they need to, Look at these BA's, OBP's and you can see why this team is where it is. They have one good SP (Hendricks) and not much beyond him (just look at how many HR their pitchers have given up to Cincy in the first 2 games. Hoyer talks retool but Re-build is actually needed. If they trade 2 or 3 of their "stars" what will they get back for them? AA players, maybe a AAA player or two or some MLB player who is questionable and not similar in stature or ability.... Sorry for being negative but this team has many, many holes and too many guys they counted on who have failed to live up to expectations for 2-3 years in a row now. Rebuild the team, fans will keep coming no matter what so why not rebuild now.

Bryzzo out of lineup today

This line up might end up as a standard. Baez might get suspended and Nico gets the injury bug and Alcantara brought up.

Regardless it will be interesting how this plays out.

Im holding out Rizzo to Boston.

Bryant shoot I can see 3 teams on him right now. Rays, SFG and SDP.

I think ATL is still an outside possibility and maybe LAD if they are really giving pujols playing time

Suprised Scherzer pitching today

Wouldnt shock me if the buyers were wanting to see him pitch before buying. Most likely 50 pitch day to see how he responds.

Atl they would be fooling themselves. That team has warts.

LAD only if Max inks elsewhere. I still see their biggest need as replacing Bauer. Everything else is health related and time fixes that.

Figured tepera was the next block to move. They gotta move some guys before tomorrow but probably holding the biggest chips longest to maximize value

Or he is trying to hold it over their heads to get them to come down on their extend price tags.
