100% trade down.....and it's not close

If you're telling me I can't trade down and forced to pick a player at #9

100% Dallas Turner....and it's not close

Turner or Odunze, but it’s so funny to see braindead sports pundits like on ESPN 1000 just completely dismiss the idea of people like Alt or Turner being there at 9.

Math still exists, right?

Before the Bears pick, we could easily see some combination of:

Caleb Williams
Drake Maye
Jayden Daniels
JJ McCarthy
Marvin Harrison, Jr
Malik Nabers
Rome Odunze
Joe Alt

HOLY SHIT, would you look at that?!?! Dallas Turner fell to 9!

Someone awesome will absolutely fall to 9. This “He won’t be there” bullshit is dumb.
That drives me crazy every year. Based on how many guys “won’t be there,” it might be tough to hold a draft. It’s the same nonsense every year. Math is hard.

Also, maybe CB 1 goes top 9. It’s quite possible both LAC and the Titans go OT.

Atlanta has a gaping hole at edge.

The QB frenzy might lead to the insanity of 5 going before 9. Penix Jr. being impressive at his Pro Day doesn’t hurt.

Someone with Turner's measurables and pedigree is not available at 9 very often unless they have notable issues. Gotta take the guy who has a solid shot to be even close to Micah Parsons as a player.
Sure has the chops to be coached up.

Atlanta could also trade out and get one a little lower due to the QB situation. Penix always looks impressive in any workout. Just doesn't seem to get his deserved respect. Doubt he goes that early but JJ could still be there at 8. Almost a month away and perspectives can change a lot by then.

He looked good in almost every game he played the last two years. That Michigan game was rough. It’s obvious he can kill you from a clean pocket. The accuracy and ball placement are excellent. Plus, he has massive hands which helps with ball security.

I think the Giants are interested in a QB.

From PFT:

“The Giants had a large contingent watching Penix. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that head coach Brian Daboll, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney, receivers coach Mike Groh, General Manager Joe Schoen, assistant G.M. Brandon Brown and director of player personnel Tim McDonnell were among those present for the team.”

I love Dallas Turner but I am really struggling with his fit in Chicago's Defense. Turner is essentially a 3-4 outside LB that occasionally has a hand in the dirt. Jared Verse is more of a traditional 4-3 DE.

Dallas Turner on a team like Baltimore would be a STUD but with Chicago, I don't think he is going to hold up because he will be playing with his hand in the dirt the majority of the time (instead of in a 2 point stance).

Go back and watch the Bama games, especially the game against Michigan where Turner was stonewalled all game. He is at his best when is in that 2 point stance and can just free rush the QB (He didn't really show in the Michigan game at all because of their elite line play). I think if forced into that 3 point stance, he just isn't going to hold up.

If forced to take a DE, the pick should be Verse. If the interior D-Line was more experienced and solid, then I could see Turner, but then Flus would really have to change his defensive philosophy and lets face it, Flus and Change don't really go together.

Verse is so similar to Sweat it’s kind of crazy. They would make great bookends. Verse is long and powerful. He plays the run tough. It gives you two guys that set a hard edge and can get around a tackle or push him straight back into the QB.

Verse has a couple of highlights where he bull rushes the OT into the QB and knocks them both to the ground.

I'm pretty sure Atlanta is set at LT, QB, and WR; and I'm also pretty sure fans are overvaluing WRs, but I'll humor this 'what if?'

If I cant trade down and have to use 9, it's Laiatu Latu from UCLA. Best 2-way DE in the draft.

Doesn't disappear for long stretches with chunk-sack games against far inferior opponents like Verse, and schematically he's better for Flus' system. Dallas Turner is a better stand up 3-4 edge than a hand-in-the-dirt 4-3 DE, which he's never been, and a thin frame is going to get him blocked a lot of plays when a lot of his success at Bama was predicated on him using a superior angle on the OT before speed/power combo and his long arms to get him better outside leverage and to compensate for his small frame. I'm also pretty sure if Atlanta stays at 8, then they're taking Turner.

Bears need a DE that can help out Sweat and play the run, which Latu is fantastic at. The only questions are a neck injury which caused him to miss time, and short arms, which is sure to send 'traits' idiots on this board into a tizzy, unless that only matters for OL. I can't keep up with the 'traits' folks these days, they like singular things sooooo much which often equates to bad overall players.

8 of Latu’s sacks came against Coastal Carolina, USC, and Colorado. USC and Colorado had awful offensive lines. He racked up 3 of them in the Coastal Carolina game.

Another came against Stanford and they were a terrible team. That’s 9 of his 13.

He had a half sack combined versus Oregon State and Utah.

I’m not ripping him but I’m suggesting context is important.

There will be a quality player at 9 that will improve the Bears in an area of need....will also net the Bears some extra picks if that is the route they go....

I expect the Bears to be busy on UDFA on one year deals.

You're absolutely right. Let's look at context.

Latu against top 40 NCAAF offenses in 2023 (4 games, Arizona, USC, Oregon State, Washington State) - 6.5 sacks, 8.5 TFL, 14 pressures.

Verse against top 40 NCAAF offenses in 2023 (1 game, LSU) - 0 sacks, 0 TFL, 0 pressures, 2 assisted tackles.

Want to cherry-pick bad offenses? It still doesn't help Verse. Wake Forest is in the 100s, Southern Miss just cracks the top 100 at 99; that's 1/3 of Verse's sacks on the year. VT was in the 70s, which takes us over 50%. of his yearly production. The remainder came against Louisville and Florida, both ranked late 40s/early 50s for offense. Coastal Carolina, whom you feel the need to suggest weakens Latu's case, was 60th.

I personally like Latu a lot more than Verse but also understand those who prefer Verse. He's been healthier than Latu (which should be a factor, I'd be a hypocrite if I said I like drafting pre-injured players, and a massive neck injury for Latu which caused him to miss some previous years can cause a lot of alarm), and Verse finished 23 season against Louisville in the ACC championship game emphatically to pump some life into his stock.

So draft day hits and the first 8 picks goes some combination of:

The 4 QBs. MHJ, Nabers, Odunze and Alt.

No team wants to trade down.

Who’s your guy at 9?
Bowers and easily. I would even be fine with taking Bowers over all of the non QBs that you mentioned outside of MHJ.

Bowers is a freak. When you look at TEs that have gone early as first rounders in recent history, they were taken for pass their catching ability and not really known for blocking ability.

This why do many first round TEs usually don't live up to their billing at pro level once they hit the well known and often year long learning curve that comes with drafting a TE.

Bowers on the other hand is a fucking great blocker in the running game and as a chip in pass protect and still dominates as a pass catching TE.

Even with a learning curve that's going to come with Bowers on his rookie year he will still have a productive rookie year platooning out of the FLEX TE position with Everett. By year 2 Bowers will put up 900 - 1000 yards and 5+ TDs.

With Bowers your getting a 6th offensive lineman and a damn good one, and 1000 yard receiving redzone target and again a damn good one for Waldrons TE happy offense.

If this was last years class and Bowers was in it, I don't think we'd have a chance to get this kid. Bowers I'd the most complete and dominate TE I've seen in a long time.

If you really want to help your new QB in the most effective way possible for the long term, then take Bowers.

Fashanu without a doubt. Think last year at this time. He would have been the #1 LT off the board last year.
I do like Turner but he'd need a year or two to develop. Verse would be a better fit and more of an instant production player. I also wouldn't be against trading back and picking up picks and a lesser known LT and let them play swing for a year or two.

He most likely would be in a rotation with Walker with Walker playing more run downs and Turner more passing downs. On obvious passing downs he can easily play in a 2 point stance.

Further he will be 21 the entire 2024 season while Verse will turn 24 in November. So he likely still has a few years to fill out and add strength before reaching his peak.

Assuming their grades are close, I go Turner all day. He is more explosive, longer, and younger and would represent the speed rusher to complement Sweat.

Latu is unquestionably the best edge and it's really not debatable. My hang up with him is obviously the injury concern. But I'd be thrilled if they could trade back and add him while picking up a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

I mean if you enjoy debating a losing argument

“Unquestionably the best edge”

Awfully strong statement about a guy I see listed as 3rd on most edge rankings. I mean even MHJ is not “unquestionably” the #1 WR.

Not saying you’re necessarily wrong. Just saying it absolutely is debatable

I’m going Fashanu and protecting the franchise.

Gives me tremendous depth and flexibility on the line. Maybe not the best move short term because it leaves a hole at DE. But long term I want the OL stocked.

Round 3/4 best DL/WR/OC available. Use the 3 million saved from cutting Borom towards any FA left.
This is my thought as well. Think long term And protect the QB asset.
