I never really paid close attention until Rex started talking about Montoya. I think he could be a great goalie if given the chance, and I wouldn't be upset if the Hawks picked him up. Still relatively young, and he has dropped the blocker a few times, ala Emery.
So let's go with the scenario where its Crow, Hutton, and Emery going in to training camp. Hutton hasn't proven anything, except he came up big for the AHL affiliate. That earns him a spot in camp imo. Crow has been amazing at times and amazingly horrible at times. Emery has shown he has bounced back from injury and is solid, except for post to post. Who knows, perhaps he gets stronger in the off season.
If ANY of those 3 feel they are owed a spot in Chicago, they can **** right off. The Hawks owe those 3 dick. They have to PROVE they belong in the crease. They all have great upside, they all have terrifying downside.
The UFA market for a goalie is not fantastic, Locking up Razor for a year is good. It give the Hawks a proven solid keeper, and it can be argued both ways if he is a number 1 or 2.
Also, any UFA goalie is gonna want his payday. with the Bowmans at the helm, they aren't gonna dish out the money for one. Look at Detroit. Their goalies aren't making a ton of cash, and they haven't missed the playoffs in how long? Yes, a lot of it has to do with the team in front of them, blah blah blah, but a goalie can bail you out of a tough situation sometimes better then your D men.
I don't quite get why there has to be a number 1 and a number 2 goalie. Is it for ego? is it for bragging rights? Again, if any player is that way, he can go scratch. If Belfour wasn't such a cockbag, Hasek wouldn't have wound up in Buffalo.
