[A] Hawks Extend Emery for 1-year

I think Salak's hope came from the way Niemi was found. Very similar.

If he doesn't work out, he deosn't work out. But he's still in the mix. Neimi didn't exactly light up the AHL either. He lost his job to Crawford straight up.

One partial, injury riddled season does not make him dispensible yet IMO.

The organization is not going to bring a back up in with ZERO experience. Just like the previous organization he was with. It's not Hutton's first rodeo. Yea, he lit it up in the AHL. Guess what, it's the AHL.

I didn't see NHL teams lining up for him last year either. He was in the ECHL!!

Once again, if he earns it through his play in the AHL and at camp why shouldn't he have a legitimate shot at the team?

Obama had no experience and he got his shot............... HA

I have a feeling that Rocky is tired of funneling bucks out the door for players not on the ice. Emery with a million dollar contract in Rockford is not going to happen especially when Salak is already getting $600K.

Huh? If he's in Rockford the SC doesn't effect the Hawks. You never know Emery could be traded. 1.1 for a PROVEN back up is not that much. You are jumping the gun a little early here.

Who said anything about salary cap?

You said Afford. the only part of afford that means dick is the Salary Cap.

Your assuming.

I meant afford because the Blackhawks are broke. You didn't get the memo???? LOL

Harding but he comes with some injury issues. that's exactly why the secured Emery IMO. Why at this time, who knows and who really cares.

If Hutton wants a shot he'll stick around. if not he'll go elsewhere. He has to realize he was playing in the ECHL just a few short months ago.

I disagree with the earning it and payroll comments. The Blackhawks have another $600K year with Salak. Granted Hutton is only $65,000 a year in Rockford you are still looking at a chunk for Salak, Emery and Corey. How in the world are they going to afford to pay Hutton assuming he earns it out of camp???? The only rationale I see is that they are going to use Hutton as some form of trade bait.

Sorry, you lost me here. My payroll comments were directed to a poster who seems to think that the Hawks taking on Luongo's enormous long-term salary would be a coup (and I believe Huet's contractual obligations with the Hawks ended at midnight).

They may well use Hutton as trade bait, which would be a shame. Hutton might well be better than either Crawford or Emery. If all 3 were to compete for the 2 positions at training camp, the salary of one of them would wind up going back to Rockford or come off the Hawks salary cap via trade or release. I don't know the particulars of Hutton's contract (two-way, etc) so I can't address that.

With a .500 record and 3+ GAA for Toledo. They were horrible this year.

Montoya or Harding would have a decent backup pickup, maybe even Leighton... but hey I'm happier with Emery being here moreso.

Here's a list of UFA goalies not exactly a list of HOF players....

http://www.capgeek.c...=G&fa_type_id=2

The 3 biggest names are in the RFA category.

Price (Cant see the Habs not re-signing him)

Rask (Can't see the Bruins not re-signing him then shipping of Thomas..thats the interesting part of this)

Schnieder (Canucks won't resign him he wont play back up to Lou anymore..where does he go and what can the Canucks get for an RFA guy in a market where not many teams are desperate for a goalie?..Don't know). I would keep my eye on Washington, Toronto, Tampa as the 3 where he would not only fit well but allow the Canucks to ship him East.

Only hall of famer on the UFA list is Marty. And I think Marty might just actually hang em up at years end. Add them to the list of teams that could find interest in Schnieder if that is the case.

I never really paid close attention until Rex started talking about Montoya. I think he could be a great goalie if given the chance, and I wouldn't be upset if the Hawks picked him up. Still relatively young, and he has dropped the blocker a few times, ala Emery.

So let's go with the scenario where its Crow, Hutton, and Emery going in to training camp. Hutton hasn't proven anything, except he came up big for the AHL affiliate. That earns him a spot in camp imo. Crow has been amazing at times and amazingly horrible at times. Emery has shown he has bounced back from injury and is solid, except for post to post. Who knows, perhaps he gets stronger in the off season.

If ANY of those 3 feel they are owed a spot in Chicago, they can **** right off. The Hawks owe those 3 dick. They have to PROVE they belong in the crease. They all have great upside, they all have terrifying downside.

The UFA market for a goalie is not fantastic, Locking up Razor for a year is good. It give the Hawks a proven solid keeper, and it can be argued both ways if he is a number 1 or 2.

Also, any UFA goalie is gonna want his payday. with the Bowmans at the helm, they aren't gonna dish out the money for one. Look at Detroit. Their goalies aren't making a ton of cash, and they haven't missed the playoffs in how long? Yes, a lot of it has to do with the team in front of them, blah blah blah, but a goalie can bail you out of a tough situation sometimes better then your D men.

I don't quite get why there has to be a number 1 and a number 2 goalie. Is it for ego? is it for bragging rights? Again, if any player is that way, he can go scratch. If Belfour wasn't such a cockbag, Hasek wouldn't have wound up in Buffalo.

Where are the comments that a goalie thinks they deserve to be a part of the team coming from?

My second point is that everyone looks at the established goalies in the league as being the only choices. Well, we do have a development league for a reason, it is called the AHL. Now maybe some of those posting here are not aware of what has happened with the IceHogs the second half of the season. And if a goalie has proven themself in the AHL AND they continue to prove themself in camp, why should they not be given that opportunity? Thinking outside of these one year contracts, where will be after next season if we keep throwing one year deals out there? And why the timing of the Emery resigning right before the end of the IceHogs season? I am totally baffled by the timing of the signing.

People always bring up Detroit when it comes to not paying for goaltending. How quickly people forget when Detroit had 23 million tied in goalies (And one goalie making 9 mil a year playing in the AHL)

I don't blame Eddie for that. Sure, he's the reason I'm a Hawks fan, and was my boyhood idol. At the same time, if we didn't trade Hasek, we would have lost him in the expansion draft.

I agree with you. As for the "timing" I think Bowman has been talking extensions with the people who aren't playing in the playoffs right now (Emery, Carcillo) and after the playoffs will talk to the others (Oduya)

I think Oduya is different because of the pay scale.

This signing has zero confusion tagged to it. How someone could be confused baffles me.

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
Can't say I'm against this...but if we "have two backups" then that obviously means that the D in front of them is beer-league at best.

If we are truly going into camp with 3 guys fighting for 2 slots, then good. A little competition is never a bad thing.

I whole heartedly agree that competition is exactly what we need for our goalies. However, looking at the bigger picture, let's say that Hutton outperforms Emery or even Crawford as well and someone has to come down. Do you really think that Rocky is going to want another million dollar contract in Rockford?
