Maybe this is the wake up call I posted might happen when said player was demoted to AHL.

Amazing what happens when your livelihood becomes threatened and you need to showcase yourself.

He's going to make $3.4M this season regardless. And $4M next season... and $4.25M the following season... Wow, what a ridiculously bad contract. To think somebody can land nearly $20M while being a borderline NHL player.... Amazing.

a lot of agents try to play the "pay for potential, not talent" card. remember when Ruutu's agent wanted 2.75-3 million 5 years ago?

This move is beginning to look pretty fuzzy from my standpoint, why send down Olesz to make room for Smith if he's going to be scratched?

I understand if they were making cap room for another move, but since they never made a move it's a mind ****.

If Olesz isn't playing, why have him up? It's a pretty huge cap hit to be a healthy scratch every night....

Do we have a Cap problem? News to me. We still pay him either way so what's the difference?

If Smith is just going to be scratched, this move was stupid.

Maybe something is up with Olesz? Maybe the injury is still bothering him. It feels like something is missed in all of this.

Even if he was injured, why send him down? It's not like we'll be able to call him up... at half the price someone would probably nab him on re-entry waivers.

if it was the injury, then they could have sent him down without waivers.

He was definitely a presence on the ice in Rockford last night. IceHogs win 6-3 with that breaking their last six home game loss streak.

since I can only go by stats, and you get to watch the games, how does he look out there now that he is getting ice time?

Why not send Olesz down via waivers first, I am sure there was a hope and prayer someone would nab him. Secondly it was a good move to get him off the roster because now the team has the flexibility to send players up and down without having to send someone thru waivers every time. Now they can send Ben up and down or they can send Pirri up and down or they can send Morin up and down without ever touching Kruger because he was the only one at the time they did not have to send thru the waiver process.

if they sent him down as a conditioning stint, they would have never had to put him through waivers either though. What happens if 20 games from now we are looking at Olesz having 23GP and 50pts, and Chicago is struggling with injuries or scoring? He can't be called up, and I guarantee he gets nabbed on reentery waivers with numbers like that and half the price tag.

Producing at the AHL level and producing at the NHL level are vastly different beasts. See: Troy Brouwer.

you mean 20 goal scoring Stanley Cup winning Troy Brouwer?

jesus man, if you want to prove a point, use Brandon Bochenski.

My point was always this. Olesz never got the chance in the Indian Head. That's all.

He deserved it, but didn't get it. Bryan Bickell however...

Rex all of your points are valid, but when they sent Rusty down I am sure it was with the purpose of never seeing him again this season. And if he gets 50pts in the AHL, he will not be the first to do it and plus not see the NHL ice. He has already proved he cannot excel on the NHL level, all he is proving, he can excel in the minors.

Bryan Bickell can't be used as an example, just based on dollars. Dude has not cracked a million dollars yet,

3-5 minutes a night is hardly enough time to excel at any level.

Again, they can send Smith, Morin, Pirri up and down -- but for what? To get scratched like Smith did last night with a full roster? Leave those guys in the AHL for big minutes unless we have injuries and let Olesz be scratched if they really don't want him playing.

I've said this before, Salary is a moot point this season since we have 8m in cap space, and last i checked...teams don't get a prize for not using it. The kid should have gotten a chance. Maybe he makes the team next year playing with Brandon Pirri.

Salary is not a moot point this season, you are looking at fictitious dollars when it comes to the salary cap. The real dollars reflect a much different picture. I know you probably do not visit the OB, but I started a thread explaining real dollars vs cap dollars. I am sure the team has an overall budget of what they are going to spend on payroll.

The reason I threw Bickell's name with dollars is because he and his talent/dollars coincide with one another. Sending Bickell thru waivers would not accomplish anything because someone would snatch him at that price and plus Bickell brings more to the table than Olesz at this point. The Hawks do not have the luxury of playing player development at this stage of the game (unless your name is Leddy), this is not the 2006 Hawks.
