I think you misunderstand how important Lidstrom is/was to them. When he was hurt this season we almost passed them in the standings, they tanked hard.

Anyone who thinks Suter will take over for Lidstrom is smoking crack.

If anything Kronwall will take over the "leadership" role, not Suter. I'm not sure Suter could carry Lidstroms Jock at this point. And that's not to put Suter down, but it's LIDSTROM!

There is not a player in the world who could take over for Lidstrom when you consider what he did on and off the ice for that organization. One of the best captains of all time, as well as all of his defensive accolades.

Yup. He also spawned a new generation of European blueliners and NA ones for a lesser part. Ask most young European blueliners who they look up to and it's more often than not Lidstrom. Lidstrom is as big an influence on European born blueliners as Orr was to NA ones.

He was a legend 4 years before he retired.

Not a fair argument? Let me make it so.

In a span of two off seasons, Detroit has lost Rafalski, Lidstrom, and Stuart on the backend. Kronwall plays the same side(Left) as Suter so without Detroit making another addition, that leaves Suter paired with what? Ian White?

Look at it from Suter's perspective. He's gonna get the coin no matter what team he signs with. In Chicago, he might actually get paired with Seabrook which sure as hell beats any current option in Detroit. And there will be less pressure.

Those are better arguments that what you had in place before.

I really think he's going to Detroit. There isn't a better organization in all of sports and it's not like he's going to a terrible defensive situation.

Nobody can replace Lidstrom, but they still have many pieces on that D that are good now, and will be good in the future especially with Brendan Smith and Kindl. Plus they have some cap space to make a move or sign another dman.

I think the opportunity to be "the guy" up in Detroit where they have a stable organization is better than being #2/3 in Chicago where nobody knows what the **** is going on.

I do understand how important Lidstrom was to them. I do believe that Holland is capable enough to figure out how to move on without him. Going after Suter is going to be there main objective this off season.

Nobody can or will be able to replace Lidstrom. I have a hard time thinking they make the playoffs without him.

Olsen can do that by replacing Montador as #6. I have no reason to believe he can replace Hammer at #3and Gagner and Kane on a line together? Seems way too small to work in the NHL.

The difference was Olsen was actually trying to go in front of the net and muck it up. That was more than Leddy, Hammer, Monty, O'donnel, Lepisto, Oduja, and Keith would ever do (and in all fairness, it's not most of their games).

Believe you me I'd much rather ship out Montador but my gut is telling me that Hammer is the one to go.

You forgot who coaches this team.

Also, Q would probably have Gagner play with Kane centering, and Carcillo on the LW.

Touché.

The fly in that ointment is that either (a) Keith and Seabs are continued to be slotted together and Suter is stuck with Monty, outside chance of Oduya, or he's trying to raise Leddy--which may not be more attractive than Detroit. Or, if (

He is slotted with Seabs then watch the bottom fall out of Keith's numbers since he will have to play with Oduya, Monty, or Leddy.

In this, it seems like Suter would be just a Keith replacement. Not that the guy isn't capable as hell, but it seems to me that if he were avaliable a guy cut from the same cloth as a Seabrook/Weber would be the option we need more than a guy cut from the cloth of a Suter/Keith.

Is Monty's health even back to normal yet? I might be tough to move him after he missed so much time last season.

That's part of why I think Hammer is shipped over Monty.

suter is a seabs type player to my knowledge. Might just have a better offensive upside. Weber is more of the keith from what I know

It may actually start getting harder and harder to trade guys like Hammer right now not really knowing if the season is going to start on time or if there will even be one. I don't suspect there will be to much movement around the league this offseason until some security is in place. Just talking out my ass but it may delay a few moves.

Hammers contract may also be a bit too high for some teams esp considering the unkown future cap numbers etc.

I don't expect him moved anytime soon.

Not 100% but I do not believe the "Wings" are the front runner.

Sad but true. Hopefully Suter is looking at team that have a very strong chance to bring him to the promise land within 5 years and notices that without Lidstrom the Wings are going to struggle.
