Cubs could get more back in a deal than they gave up last winter to acquire him from Tampa Bay.

Two sources tell me that price on Garza is tremendously high and interested parties are seeing how high someone is willing to go.

Hawt. Someone is about to get swindled.

Seems to me the Cubs are likely honing in on the Tigers, who have reportedly made Jacob Turner available. They're probably trying to see what they can get for filler. But if it comes down to it, I think they'll do a straight-up trade. Turner might be a "nothing" now but the years of cost control and his youth make him more valuable in the long run...and that's partly why I think the trade hasn't happened yet, because Detroit can't be that stupid and are mulling it over. Garza would help Detroit contend now, but how many more wins do they need to stay ahead of the rest of the abysmal division?

I think if Detroit was chomping at the bit and just offered Turner, the Cubs would be all over that yesterday.

Time for another steal for the Cubs.

hopefully this shuts CO's trap up about Jacob Turner for Garza.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told Lynn Henning of the Detroit News that they have no plans to trade top pitching prospect Jacob Turner.

NL Central Notes: Garza, Cubs, Cespedes, Astros: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

A contending team can land Cubs right-hander Matt Garza if they're willing to part with three prospects from a team's "A" list, a Major League source tells Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The Red Sox, Yankees, and Blue Jays are among the teams known to be interested, but none have upped their offers to this point.

If the Cubs don't back down I pretty much expect them to try to re-sign Garza to an extension.

Comment From Karena
Do you think Garza and Big Z could get the Cubs LoMo?

2:13
Tim Dierkes: No...Z has negative trade value, and I didn't think Garza could get the Cubs LoMo. So trying to throw in Z makes it even less likely.

Dierkes does think the Marlins and Yankees will still try to get Garza although I don't know why either team would overpay.

Comment From Tommy
Zambrano and Garza for Gaby, Yelich, Dominguez, and Fernandez. Who hangs up first?

2:26
Tim Dierkes: If you took out Z (or the Cubs picked up 90% of the tab) I could see the match. Seems like too much for the Marlins to give up for Garza really.

Some good position players in that theoretical trade scenario but I figured Garza should be used to get pitching in return.

Aspirations of contending and lack of starting pitching combined with Edwin Jackson being the next best pitcher available?

That would seem to make the most sense because again the guys the Cubs have coming through the pipeline the next couple of years profile as at best middle of the rotation guys. That is why the Marlins rumors never made much sense because of their lack of pitching, but if teams are truly dropping "out" over the price, a package of young major league and prospects might make sense for the Cubs.

It's extremely difficult to figure out what the Cubs are planning here. I think Scott Boras' demands for a guy like Edwin Jackson are ridiculous, but I also think a team is more willing to pay for EJax than to part with their best prospects for Garza.

The Yanks are probably not going to do the trade because they want to get below the luxury tax threshold and actually have a decent system so they'd cultivate their own best talent instead of flipping it for Garza in my opinion. The Jays and Tigers seem to be the same way.

So the only way Garza gets traded now is if some other team takes stupid pills and decides to offer the moon for Garza. I think the Cubs aren't all that desperate to offload Garza though and that's why I think an extension is in the mix. Although they might just do the one year arb thing and see what happens at midseason, but you'd potentially get less back for Garza depending on his performance to that point and also factoring in the loss of service time to the trading partner.

To make a long story short...I don't know what will happen but right now I'm leaning towards the belief that the Cubs will keep Garza in some capacity, be it until midseason or as a 4-5 year extension.

I'd say that a Garza deal is going to happen soon. I don't see the possibility of an extension at this point.

We should try and keep Garza for at least a few years. We have to have some good players or the Cubs might as well not even put a team on the field at this point.

hopefully this shuts CO's trap up about Jacob Turner for Garza.

How about you trying reading the whole quote:
“We are not looking to trade Jacob Turner …. We love the guy. But I have received calls from clubs wondering if we would be interested in certain players because they have interest in our players. And he is a guy they ask about immediately because he is held in such high esteem …. Do we listen to anybody? Yes. But we are not looking to trade Jacob Turner by any means.”
I would love to find where he says they will not trade Jacob Turner in that quote.
