The Cubs wont go after big free agents until you start seeing prospects settle in.. Like Jackson and Vitters throw in Lake Baez Almora and Soler. Theres no point to sign a big free agents right now and let them waste years on their contract when the time wont be good for three years

This I actually doubt. If you go back and look at how the Sox were built, and Theo was active in that building as early as 1999, they initially built up around the few solid players they had coming from their farm and surrounded them with Big FAs (Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon, Keith Foulke) and trade acquisitions (Pedro Martinez with an extension, David Ortiz, Orlando Cabrera, Curt Schilling). Why would Epstein change from this if he has the financial means to uphold it, especially when he had such tremendous success with it?

The Cubs don't have much in terms of SP prospects that look like they'll be ready within the next 2-3 years and be productive. This winter, as of now, looks to hold a lot of excellent pitching in the FA market that should be reasonably attainable and safe (as long as you don't get stupid and hand out contracts longer than 4-5 years). Epstein has shown in the past that he will act when the market is in his favor, and he has the chance to produce a fixture for the team's future. Granted, this could change in an instant as I doubt any team would pay dearly in term of spects for a 2-3 month rental like Greinke and Hamels unless they either have a deal in place to extend them... or believe they can before all is said and done.

There's a good chance at making this team very good for next season, if not competitive, with just a handful of moves. Also, those moves can be made in a manner that will not block any of the rising spects in the system for very long. Thus, providing a sudden charge in the standings to please the fans and increase revenue... while keeping an eye on the long term plan. If certain things work out (things the team is already banking on), this team could be truly competitive for 2014. You then have the opportunity to bring up the spects in the lower levels to a winning environment, rather than letting them toil in a losing environment.

Easy, make Koyie Hill play every position. The Legend continues!

Cubs are heavily shopping Dempster it seems. Dempster will be the last pitcher before the All-Star break and the first one after.

What are we expecting for Dempster?

Are we going to get a top prospect from a team like the Dodgers [RHP Zach Lee] or are ewe hoping for 2-3 players from further down the list?

Most people seem to think that the price will be prospects further down the list. It is interesting to see how the new CBA plays out with the lack of compensation for traded players and fewer sellers.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/19508297/gm-survey-matt-garza-more-valuable-as-trade-commodity-than-even-zack-greinke-or-cole-hamels

Since we are talking about the value of Garza on the market. This article seems to suggest that Garza has more "value" than Greinke or Hamels on the market according to GMs. Also suggested the Cubs are looking for 3 good pieces back. As with everything take it with a grain of salt.

I think Garza has some hidden value because of the AL East experience. He has pitched in big games.

We need 2 big time pitching prospects back

I agree, which is why so many AL East contenders have been looking at him... if you believe the rumors. That will also boost his overall value.

Betancres and Banuloes have been crap and hurt unfortunately, and it seems like Cashman isn't likely to part with anything great for Garza.

According to most rankings that is the best that they have.

And while they are having down years they were both very highly thought of last season.

That is the fickle nature of prospect though. The Yankees do have other prospects, but like the Cubs prospects the good ones are 3+ years away.

That is why I think we need to target Turner from Detroit as he looks ready to join the rotation now or at least by September.
