the best thing since............would be starlin castro, moving milton bradley....etc. those are comparable. he talks about 2008 all the time, all the time, great you won 97 games and got swept, it was a failure. so to keep bringing up 2008 in some context every chance he gets is fucking stupid. its 2011, going on 2012

If I had a choice between Starlin Castro, and having won it all in 2008, I'd honestly choose Castro... because he will be the centerpiece of any World Championship team we may or may not have between now and 2025, and could still be around come 2030. That is, assuming he meant it when he said he wanted to be a Cub for his whole career.

That is dumb. If you told me that you did x and you were guaranteed a world championship, I would do x 99% of the time. That said there is no such scenario and we get to enjoy Starlin Castro for, hopefully, a long time.

I just like Castro, so I made an exaggerated pro-Castro remark.

ya even with castro long term we are guaranteed a championship..what,in the future, dictates the cubs would win one title? you have no idea

i'd rather take a guaranteed championship in this hypothetical where there is less uncertainty and variables(think about injuries, etc.)

No, and no and just flat out no.

If the sox didnt win in 2005 and someone came down and said "look, you can have a title this year, but if you want that title you will have to deal with 20 years of crappy baseball" I would say....sign me up! Championships are hard to come by in the MLB, I would trade it all for another title.

That is simply ridiculous to think that he isn't worth more than 10 million. He is putting up a better year than he did the last season where he racked up 200 innings with a 3.35 ERA in the AL in a hitters ballpark.

Why is he overrated? What don't you like about him?

19m a year should only go to the elite CC, Doc ect.

he is 11-5 if i was in charge the most I would give him is 4yrs 45m and that's really pushing it IMO. You can get inning eaters a lot cheaper.. But im a fan of getting players you can control for multiple years before they hit free agency. I think pitchers like Wilson get way over paid look at Ted Lilly and Kyle Loshe for example it is ridiculous the amount teams give average inning eater pitchers

Unless I've been under a rock he's not a top five starter

If any team pays him close to 19m per year i would probably lose all hope in baseball GM's and FOs. I think there should be a salary cap if the Yanks or Boston pay him that much. I never saw AJ Burnett getting what he got in FA but giving Wilson 19m per year would be just as bad of move. If that happens they need rule changes ASAP imo.

oh 2008 again? what was the "best thing" about 2008? the first round sweep? idiot. keep living in the past dope.

The part where we were the best team in baseball.

i agree with CO here:shifty:...although i do think that Hendry will/should be gone very soon(i guess thats a little off the topic of the response..but just a somewhat related note)

Nl 3rd base position is weak and i dont think he's the best 3rd baseman because of his defense(i'd arguably take zimmerman healthy and panda over him)...although unless we get good value off of ramirez..i think he should still be on the team

I can see it both ways, we lose a really consistent top of the rotation pitcher, but at the same time we also lose a guy who's a ticking time bomb and is on the downward slope of his career and has a fat contrat

i dont like just having demp and garza upfront in the rotation tho....those are two good leading pitchers in the rotation..but after that its a lot more dicy...

the cubs need to look for a pitcher or two or we're going to have issues next season

Well.... Zimmerman isn't healthy and I agree, I would take Panda as well. I just looked at the qualified list of players. My bad. Regardless, I still want Rami on this team next year.

Z isn't worth the contract and if you can get rid of the contract, you do it.

As for the whole CJ Wilson stuff, I think that he would be nice to have, but let's think about this for a minute. Do we really want to pay a pitcher that is 31 over 15 million dollars a year? I know that I don't. It's those kinds of contracts, that got this team into a whole world of hurt. Z and Soriano's contracts have really put this team into a bind. I only want to give a big contract to a player who can be a 6 WAR player. CJ Wilson is a 4 WAR player at best. Maybe in the NL Central, he might be able to get close to a 5 WAR player, but that's just not enough to warrant 15+ million. If you can get him for less, then by all means, go for it. Although I don't want it more than 4 years, because that will come back to bite us in the ass.

Best team in baseball in 2008 was actually the Phillies. They won the World Series. That's what I consider the best.

19 million is not top 5 starter money however. And I said in the neighborhood. Really 15 million is probably the fair market value, but...(read below)
i hope he wasnt meaning 19 million a year. I really hope I read that wrong.
19 is overpaying, but I am assume you are going to have to overpay to get him in a market where his competition is Buehrle and Edwin Jackson most likely.
19m a year should only go to the elite CC, Doc ect.
Doc gets paid 20 million. CC gets paid 23 million possibly more if he opts out. Cliff Lee gets paid 24 million. To get those guys you have you to pay more than 19 million. Those elite guys are all in the above 20 million range.

he is 11-5 if i was in charge the most I would give him is 4yrs 45m and that's really pushing it IMO. You can get inning eaters a lot cheaper.. But im a fan of getting players you can control for multiple years before they hit free agency. Calling CJ Wilson an innings eater is ridiculous. We are using record to determine how good he is as a pitcher? He has a low 3 ERA in the AL in a very friendly hitters ballpark. CJ Wilson is way better than Ted Lilly or Kyle Lohse ever were and are. Look I get it that CJ Wilson doesn't have the big name, but he has been a very good starter. He has outpiched Zach Greinke the past two seasons. He is in that second tier of top of the rotation starters. He isn't that elite ace, but he is capable of being either a somewhat weak number 1 or very good number 2. And if you look at the market 15-19 million is the price of those guys.

And seriously we are calling the deal the Cubs gave Ted Lilly a bad deal? Out of all the free agent signings Jim Hendry has made that is probably the only one that actually worked out.
