Pace really has to have a hell of a draft to instill some confidence as far as im concerned. I havent been impressed with a single move hes made, though hes made a few i flat out hate, this would be another.

And I love how a number of fans immediately try selling themselves on the idea of any and every possible move. Yeah, sure the team would be better off without Bennett.

I don't think anyone wants to lose Bennett. But I do think the Bears are trying to build a certain culture here and the message is if you don't buy in.... then get the **** out. Time will tell if this is the correct move or not but I'm not going to freak out until we at least have an offseason under our belts.

Soo even hub talked about this. Kt would suck to loose bennet but it wouldn't be that big of a deal.... By the time the bears are good again bennet will be old and useless. Plus he wants more guaranteed money.. And he wont be getting it from this team

This is not selling my self to the idea... Its just a team trying to get younger and you have a guy coming off a pro bowl that might never go back there again. Sell high while he actually has value and a 3rd or 4th round pick for him

I agree with that completely.

@OmarKelly: Don't sleep on the Saints trading for Martellus Bennett. Makes too much sense.

On this note.... are there any TEs in the draft Pace might have his eye on?

If you trade Bennett, assuming for picks in this year's draft.... gotta think they draft a TE.

really weak class of TE's this year. Most are short (6'5 and under) and none are as good as Bennett. We will have to probably draft two TE and stack them to equal what we lost in Bennett.

Is he on the roster? They can probably pick up that athletic freak who could run like the wind, but caught the ball like a 3 year old. His name escapes me, but we kept bringing him back to camp and even practice squad I believe:)

Fendi Onubon....lol

The question is not whether the bears are better or worse off with or without him... the question is would you be willing to give a player who is only 2 years into his deal a new deal on the backside of his career? I don't want to see him go either, but I certainly don't want to re work his deal just because he thinks he deserves it... That's not how the world works. Especially not with a new regime who are not linked in any way to players that they did not draft or sign.

I suspect they can make him play and he wont sit out but they just don't want to deal with it as next year, he probably will do it all over again. They have probably told his agent that if he can find a deal that offers a decent trade and him a new contract for over $1m more per, go for it. If he can't get that deal or trade value of someone worth over $5m a year, he'll may just settle down and shutup. Well, at least about a raise for this year.

I also agree with the GTFO if you can't play nice sentiment and this is a passive way of getting him in line or gone.

I think he's sending a message. He will not be giving away the child. Bennett is at or near the top of all NFL TEs. If a trade like this happens, it's as likely to be down as up. They've been very insular, so I don't think many of us know what has been going on at Halas Hall and I doubt we ever really will.

Which, is exactly why he might be more valuable right now as trade bait. If the draft is considered weak for TE's, a team may overpay for Bennett and the Bears can get good value. Especially since the TE might not be a major part of this offense, which is the wildcard.

Max Williams will be a beast in the NFL and might be available in the early to mid 2nd round. Also like Walford from Miami and Heuerman from Ohio St and there's some people that like N.O'Leary from FSU.

Yep, good thing we have a QB like Manning to run the offense...

What does not having Manning have to do with if Gase uses the TE in his offense? I can't see them getting rid of Bennett and not bringing a TE in to replace him. We resigned Miller but he always gets hurt but has done some good things when healthy. I think the plan is to draft a TE if we trade Bennett and would love to get Max Williams.

My argument is, I think Bennett has real value in a weak TE class. Why not take offers for him? Why is he untouchable in some posters opinion? I was replying to your comments specifically and in no way do I feel we have a QB that can run an offense like Denver. I don't even feel the Bears offense this season will resemble Denver's even if the Bears kept everyone. I'm not sure they allow Jay to throw the ball more than 20-25 times / game. IMO, if the Bears are more ball control, you don't need a receiving TE like Bennett. It would be wasted money. Go get some value for him and fill other needs on this roster, save some money and get younger.

Sorry for the confusion.

They are taking offers for him that's why we have this thread.

If they can get good value, for him you bet your ass they'll be trading him. It's a sell high scenario where this team won't be competing for a Super Bowl with him the next two years and he is likely gone after that. You get proper value for him now in a trade because this team isn't playoff bound with him in place the next two years.

Yep. We're a team going through a big change and it's going to take a couple of years to get this team where the new staff wants it to be. This change doesn't involve J.Cutler, M.Bennett, M.Forte, J.Allen, S.McLellin, T.Jennings and didn't involve L.Briggs or Peanut, so just sit back and watch us change for the better and in hopefully 2 years we'll be a team that will be ready to compete for the playoffs and championships.

I don't buy that 'by the time the Bears are good again' horseshit.

This isn't the Cubs and Theo's 4 year grace period.

This is the NFL. EVERY single season there are 5 playoff teams that weren't in the playoffs the prior year. Every season there is a worst to first team. No other sport offers a one year turnaround like the NFL does.

Build a team to win today. The Bears traded away one of the best WR in the NFL - creating a hole where there was none. Now they are considering trading away a very good young TE and creating a hole where there wasn't one.

And besides, there are zero guarantees that these moves that Pace is making are going to magically make the Bears good. The reality is, that for the last 30 years, the Bears have been a mediocre to suck team. Just because there is new blood ensures nothing. There is an equal chance that the Bears will suck in a few years when people are saying it is sort of some done deal that they 'will be good again'.
