Five years ago the Hawks were probably a top three in overall team speed. Cap issues, player aging and acquisitions like Runblad, Rozy and Scuderi would probably put them in the bottom half of the league today. Other than cap relief, I can't see where this trade is helping them on any front.
The hawks went from a guy who was fast, played no D, and who's O gane was more absent than Toews to a guy who is as slpw as Rosie, plays little O, and has some D skills and banked a million in cap for a future trade or paying Panarin's bonus.

It's not a bad trade, just a Meh. one. Boiled down we traded speed and nothing else for slowness, some D and 1M.

Isn't that what I just said?

:alborland:

out of all the defensemen they've traded over the past year, the one they got the best immediate package for is the only one playing in the NHL, being Dahlbek.

Not quite...they went from a guy who plays no D and won't muck it up to someone that, so far, is willing. So, cap hit and slight D upgrade.

Just seems a tad redundant to have Rozi and Scuderi on the same team. Virtually the same player, IMO.

On the surface I agree. I could have said the same for what Daley showed and Runblad...except Daley had speed but never put it to use with us.

Since both are geriatric, their time can be split...IMHO Runblad's still the weak link now. Goose should be up.

Definitely. Hope that move is coming real soon.

We can only hope. Problem is Stan has a hard-on for Runblad...If nothi g else the cap freed heps pay for The Breadmaster's bonuses.

I think they are actually pretty different players that just happen to be towards the end of their careers. Rozi certainly likes to take more chances on the offensive side and with the puck on his stick and Scuderi doesn't go anywhere near the offense and attempts to keep it as simple as possible. I wouldn't consider Rozsival a stay at home Dman at all.

It isn't really going to free up any cap space at all though, pretty minimal. Also, who would you rather have not playing...Gus or Rundblad? No reason to bring Gus up and have him sit. Call him up when he is needed to play and then send him back after so he can continue to develop. Rundblad's development is a thing of the past.

Both old. Both slow. Even if Rozi wishes to take chances on the offensive side he's no longer quick enough to do so.

If I'm not mistaken Panarin's bonuses top out at over 2M, and TT's bring the total to about 3M. I'm not sure how much Hockeycap takes the bonuses into consideration with respect to the cap, however the projected cap we have now because of the trade could go a long way towards making sure our cap celing is as high as possible next season since The Breadmaster is tearing ass across the league thus far.

I do agree though that Runblad is the weak link and needs to be jettisoned ASAFP. If I was in charge (which I'm not), I would have Goose in virtually every game and rotate Scud and Rosie in slot-6.

Totally agree with that.

I will play devils advocate for Daley here, and say that it's possible that while his numbers were not great, we watched the games and he was a guy who handled the puck and put pressure on the Defenses he faced because he COULD do something. He was more valuable in the absence of Keith, so that was a bit lucky to have him around in that transition. I'm glad he brought us a sound stay at home physical D Man with more big game experience than himself.

It's worth pointing out that the team had not been shut out in 26 consecutive games at least, until Scuderis first game. And Daley missed two in that stretch. I'm not saying Daley being gone contributed for sure, I'm just saying that that happened, and it's worth considering having an offensive threat around in Daley could have opened things up in some ways for more lines than just the ones Keith can support.

That is one of the dumbest Devils advocates I've ever read. You might as well blame toews slump on him too then.

Saying that Daley wasn't impacting the offense is kind of like saying that because Toews goes through a little slump he isn't in the conversation with Messier for the greatest leader in sports history, that he sucks now because of points, and ignoring the leadership, face-offs, turnovers, game winners, and overall pressure that Toews complete hockey skill puts on defenses.

If Toews isn't scoring, its because he is a focal point of the opponent and it means more opportunity for others.

I'm not saying Daley was invaluable, I am just saying that he handled the puck and was able to carry it through ice that other defenders do not attempt. He put pressures on opponents and made them be honest. T-Roz and Scuderasoraus do not.

What is better for the Blackhawks? I don't know. But that shut out hurt my feelings.
