That was Joey Votto's fault for not handling the hop

Tough error. But the throw definitely could have been better.

Bad throw, but it seemed like Votto should have made the play.

Votto probably fucked it up because he hates the cubs.

I don't care what any of you guys say, but I bet some of you are surprise he didn't hit 30 yet. His defense has improved and he had like 18 or so by June and just 22 now.

I've always been fine with the errors. He's young he will get better.

And a lot of the errors are trying to make a hard play into an outstanding play.

If in two years if he is still having these problems let's rethink his position but for now let him work out the kinks.

He's just gotta avoid another 3-4 error game, honestly.

Oh, and watching the ball when it's pitched might help :shifty:

All the things that people say about Starlin Castro are what people said about Rafael Furcal early on. I really think that he will be an okay defensive shortstop. He will still have lapse from time to time which results in more errors and a lower fielding percentage, but his canon for an arm will make some plays that other SS's simply can't make. And I for one am glad to finally watch an actual SS with an arm as opposed to the noodle arms we've had in Theroit, Gutierrez, etc.

Agreed 100%...He might make 10-15 more errors then normal but will make 50-60 more plays then most SS also

fwiw, I like Castro...i'm glad we have him. This thread probably makes it appear otherwise, but I'm glad he's our SS. His mental lapses bother me far more than him making an error trying to make a play, but to his credit he's cut way down on them this season. I didn't see the error today.

I agree. On the team's website, ARam was talking about how everyone needed to back off on him. That young players do things like that, no big deal. That he did things like that. ARam STILL does things like that. For ARam to use himself as an example, it only shows how much the problem needs to be taken care of now, for it was never truly taken care for him.

As far as Castro's defense goes, he's made so absolutely incredible plays that only a handful of other SS in the game right now might be able to make. However, like Furcal and even Ozzie Smith when they both first came up, he makes the routine plays look difficult... but the difficult plays look routine... and he pulls off that near miracle play once every couple of weeks. He is getting better, you can see it just about every game. I think there are times where he needs to slow down a bit and make sure his throw is good. there are other times when he needs to stop and realize that a throw would be a mistake.

I agree with virtually everything you said in your second paragraph. However, your second paragraph contradicts the first paragraph. No one ever said Ramirez makes plays no other 3B made. They have said that he loses focus at times and that continues to this day, but Ramirez was never thought to really have any plus defensive tools as far as I recall.

I've been saying this for a long time, but I will keep at it. Castro at SS maximizes his strengths (athleticism, arm strength, and range) whereas any other position would minimize those strengths.
