I agree with virtually everything you said in your second paragraph. However, your second paragraph contradicts the first paragraph. No one ever said Ramirez makes plays no other 3B made. They have said that he loses focus at times and that continues to this day, but Ramirez was never thought to really have any plus defensive tools as far as I recall.

I've been saying this for a long time, but I will keep at it. Castro at SS maximizes his strengths (athleticism, arm strength, and range) whereas any other position would minimize those strengths.

The first paragraph was more along the lines of the mental lapses, and the "oh whatever" attitude that shows up once in a while. This has been something I've been on ARam's case about since he signed the first big contract extension. He was the one putting himself up as an example as to why punishing Castro for not paying attention was no big deal, that he'd grow out of it. Yet, ARam has never really grown out of it.

I agree that mental lapses aren't something to just be excused, and that hopefully Castro grows out of it. I will agree that Ramirez never grew out of it as well, but to compare their situations from a player value standpoint is apples to oranges consider their relative tools on offense and defense.

I've been in management long enough to understand a very simple rule.... if you let the guys that have been around for a long time slack off while still doing a relatively good job.... the new guys will eventually follow suit. It doesn't matter if they have the same exact job, similar jobs, or entirely different jobs.

I wouldn't presume to understand the situation in your field. Just like I wouldn't presume to understand the dynamics of a major league team.

And yet you see the same exact dynamics... no matter the field. You can see it by how they perform. For example, the difference between ARod and ARam... drive. ARam could easily be a routine .310+ hitter with 40-50 HR and 120+ RBI every year. He could be a GG caliber 3B. But, he doesn't put in the effort to always be pushing himself. So, you get All star caliber numbers from him most years... but not the HoF caliber numbers he has the talent of achieving.

It's human nature. You either 1 have the drive to constantly keep yourself going, or 2 you will do just enough to make yourself look good and slack off the rest of the time, or 3 you don't have the drive to do anything at all. We see this in pro sports often, though the guys of the 3rd sort never really make it. Most of the guys are the 2nd sort, while you have the 'leaders', 'captains', etc fitting the 1st group.

I think there is a pretty sizeable talent gap between Aramis and ARod.

Too late to back out of your bet... :shifty:

The Non-waiver Back-out deadline was July 31st...

Then you fly me and Waldo to a private island where his balls will be sucked. But just me and Waldo.

I don't like other people watching when I have balls in my mouth.

Wait a moment. So I am going to give you the best scenario. 10 more errors, 60 more plays. Making an error every 6 plays is a good thing?????

Castro has actually made about as many errors as Elvis Andrus this year, and for whatever reason Andrus is considered a pretty good shortstop. So there's that.

Obviously you want the error rate to go down, but the point is that Castro's superior range allows him to get to more balls in play, and this will logically lead to more chances for errors, unfortunately.

Right now, probably not. We don't know what will happen next year. By the end of next season we'll have three seasons' worth of MLB data to see whether they stick with Castro at SS or move him somewhere else. Heck, they might even trade him *shrug*
