I have mixed emmotions on the subject. I always thought Cheli was an excellent player when he played for the Hawks, plus he was a home town boy. He gave his heart and soul when he played here. I'm like most fans and was really pissed when he signed with the Wings, but the Hawks were letting players go left and right at the time and I think he was on his way out as well. They had already got rid of Suter, Carnie and Weinrich, 3 out of their top 4 defenseman within one year. Hawks management used the age thing with Cheli, but what it really boiled down to was Dollar Bill Wirtz and the money.
Personally as much as I was upset with the deal, I understood it was a business move. Plus after having my heart broken when my boyhood ideal Hull left, Cheli being traded to the Dead Things was nothing compared to that deal. I'm not going to totally blame B Wirtz for that, A Wirtz had a lot to do with the out come and Hull was no angel........another day another time on that.
I really believe that Chelios thinks a lot of people that were booing him or don't respect him was because he went to the Wings. My biggest ax to grind all these years has been the 75th Anniversary picture. I don't remember if I was at the game and saw the picture on the score board or in the paper the next day, but it really pissed me off. It was an honor to be asked to be in that picture with all those great players and to be be part of the Blackhawks heritage. How disrespectful can you be to the culture and history of the team and wear another jersey. If he didn't want to respect the tradition then he should have had the class to say no rather than to except so he could make some pussy ass statement to management. Personally if I was in charge, he would have never been in the picture unless he was wearing a Hawks jersey. I'm sure some of the players were pissed and thought he was an asshole for doing it, but they were classy enough not to let him ruin the moment.
If I would have been at the game I would have never booed him because I have respect for his family being there, but I have no problem with the people who did boo him. JR...one of the best US players and at times over opinionated...that's just JR.
