I am posting here because JoeCawks is being a Special person, and because he says that I'm the reason he goes in the Blackhawks forum less, so maybe this post will make him leave. :smug:

^^^ I'd be curious to hear what people around here think of Ben Smith and what they expect of him for the future. I get the feeling that a lot of people here are a whole lot higher on him than I am - not to say I think he sucks or shouldn't be in the NHL at this point.

He's my favorite player, but that doesn't mean he's fantastic. I tend to base my favoritism on hard workers. That's what I like about Smith. He works hard and shows up every game.

I think he's a great player for the bottom 6, but doesn't really belong in the top 6. I like where he is now, but if Bickell starts to play better and Frolik comes back from his injury, he will be moved to the fourth line. He's a great fourth liner.

Alright, because I am not really high on him. He is a hard worker but I don't think he has that much higher of a ceiling. What you see with Ben Smith right now is pretty much what you will probably get with Ben Smith in 5 and 10 years down the line - when he is probably on another team. Probably a 4th line guy who needs to alter his game a little to become a mainstay in the NHL. It would be great if I was wrong and he developed into a top 6 guy, but I don't see it happening.

Agree...Ben Smith is pretty much at his ceiling.

He just got hot at a critical time last year which made his image explode

I think he'll improve a little from here, but will be a big part of the fourth line. I'm not sure if it will be the Hawks though. They have a couple bottom 6 prospects that could end up being better than Smith.

We don't need him to be top 6, with have Kane, Toews, Sharp, Hossa filling 4 of the spots and Carcillo and Stalberg playing well enough in their complementary roles.

He fits in perfectly right now, but once Frolik comes back and Bickell starts playing good hockey again, he doesn't fit in so well. I would like to see him on the fourth line with Mayers and some other 4th liner.

Even right now as it goes, I'd rather see Smith opposite wing of Frolik over lackluster Bickell on the ice.

Agreed. Bickell hasn't been very good lately. Smith-Bolland-Frolik makes a really nice line.

Kris Verstud with 2 more goals.

Clearly not needed here over guys like Frolik & Fossil Brunette.

Joe how would you have kept Versteeg while staying under the cap?

Couldn't have happened without losing Sharp. Versteeg is gone end of story. I sure as hell dont miss his turn overs

with that being true, and agreed that we moved him due to the cap. he has developed pretty damn well, and at this point, he would look damn good back in a hawks sweater.

I'm sure he would, but when he played here it was all about him on the ice. Like Skille was last year. Get the puck do a bunch of moves and either turn it over, or get a shot on net. He wanted to be the go to guy and he gets that in Florida.

We could have kept Versteeg if we'd cut Olesz the second we got him, which would have only cost us 400k under the cap. That would have saved us a few million beans right there. We could have used the money we're pissing away on Brunette too...
