I think people might be overlooking the purpose of this.

Mike Tomlin has the biggest contract in the NFL for a head coach.

The Bears just tried to "trade" for him.

This is a message to Ben Johnson's camp that money will not be an issue...

Reid and Payton are paid more and others are same or close. However, I agree that it sounds like the Bears have decided to not let money be the reason to lose out on their preferred HC should they actually find one.

If they want him money wont be the issue.

Some of ya'll seriously still think the mccaskeys are cheap. Your branes dont work then
You are dense. This has **** all to do with being cheap. It makes sense to pay Tomlin 16m a year because he all but guarantees you at least 9-10 wins so I think they would happily pay that for Tomlin. Johnson is still a complete unknown as a HC. I dont think they pay him 16m not due to cheapness but due to the fact he isn't worth 16m at this point IMO.

It would be like saying just because it makes sense to pay Mahomes 50m a year., the Bears should pay Caleb 50m a year if he demanded it right now. The difference here is Mahomes is worth 50m and Caleb is not.

Johnson may be a damn good HC but **** outta here paying him 16m before he proves he is a damn good HC.

The only last voice signing off on the record breaking deal they gave D.Watson was ownership. Stefanski only gave his opinion on the player, not the contract, and nobody thought D.Watson would take such a huge step down like he has.
Hmm so he didn't think being accused of sexually assaulting like 20-30 women was an issue that could affect his play. Seems pretty dense to me if true.

Oh I don't know. I mean it's not like there's this ongoing narrative about the McCaskeys among fans and national media that they are just an incredibly cheap organization who flies their candidates in on coach, going back to the days where people said Halas threw around nickels like manhole covers.

No, certainly there never was some sort of narrative like that around the Chicago Bears, that's continually perpetuated by people from all sorts of stratum, that might need to get addressed publicly before the Bears are capable of landing a top tier coach.

:speechless:

(For the record, I do agree with you that it is the ownership that's the major problem, but let's not pretend that narrative isn't out there and if the Bears found out it may be a concern of Johnson's camp, then what I said makes sense)

This is an old narrative. It absolutely has not been true the last decade or so

The only people who still think that are bears fans

Yeah, especially since Pace and Fox when they did the upgrades to Halas Hall, they have spent a lot to make their facilities world class.

Money has not been the issue nearly as much as hiring the right people to spend the said money on the correct coaches and players, etc.

Well that's what I'm saying though.

Unfortunately there's some out of touch national media types who also still believe in that and try to tap into that, precisely because it's still resonates with a large part of the moronic fan base we have.

And a lot of times people outside of Chicago get their takes from national types on ESPN or the NFL network and not from the beat reporters who'd be closer and know better. It's why we have the phrase out of town stupid.

That's why I think this whole thing was leaked. It's to address that because there are some national media people who still kind of run with the Bears are cheap narrative - moron Chris Collinsworth most notably but there are others...

Well. if he said it. it must be true.

Yeah he did say it lol. It’s why the Jets and Saints didn’t even bother. The Raiders got into it by firing their GM. Guess what his agent would prefer? He wants the double signing of GM and HC so guess who he is pushing Johnson to sign with?

If Poles switched agents today, you would hear how they have a great connection.

Enjoy watching the announcer owner unfairly get extra access to the candidates.

The league is a joke right now.

Paying an 18 year HC who has never had a losing season and made 2 SBs winning 1 is a lot different than paying a novice HC 16m a year.

Can you imagine if Johnson bombs and now you gotta fire a coach after 3 years while you still owe them 32m?

Fair or not (I definitely think it’s unfair) Tomlin is viewed as a has been by casuals. If we lose out on Johnson (who would be insanely fortunate to be as good as Tomlin) because of money but we’re willing to pay Tomlin they will get roasted, fair or not.

Flip side: if the Bears offer the most money but Johnson goes to the Raiders for power he will have all the pressure in the world. He will be known as the clown who passed on all these good QBs just to get destroyed because of Tom Brady winning at him.

It’s not for you Remy. Warren wants shovels in the ground this year. He needs hype for the team. Monken isn’t going to get anyone excited in the offseason. He might in the regular season that isn’t the point.

The owner of this site is George McCaskey. We would like to thank Trace Armstrong for facilitating the deal.

I disagree. I think it will be. I think the Bears would be monumentally stupid to pay Johnson more than Reid, Tomlin and other far more accomplished coaches.
The annual salaries are most often due to timing. It's a game of leapfrog. The highest paid players, for example, are the ones who most recently signed contracts, not necessarily the very best.

Jordan Love makes more than many better QBs, for example.

The Bears can certainly negotiate with Johnson or any coach based on where salary ranges are for coaches, but you don't simply say "We think you'll be better than Stefanski, but not as good as Shanahan, so we're offering the midpoint between their salaries."

Now that I see that lost of HC salaries, may be the rumored demands of $15 million are true. Maybe Ben Johnson looks at Dan Campbell and says "He's winning because of me, so I want 50% more than that meatball makes." 😂

Agreed. Its like any other open market....what you paid for your house isn't necessarily what your house is worth.

If the Bears want to offer Johnson less than what an established NFL HC with experience makes, then that is their right, but it wouldn't be based on anything in the real world. It would be based in some hypothetical remy world that doesn't mirror reality. Which would be funny coming from a franchise that once made Jay Cutler the highest paid player in NFL history due to the most inept salary cap 'magician' the sports world has ever seen.
