Yeah....don't know about this. I mean what are they basing this extension on? Is he going to be seeing the ball alot this season? Catching a lot of tds in Redzone? Helping Fields development? He's young? If it's strictly about the potential of those things then ok, or him being a core player then ok. I get it. But are they thinking he can be a top ten TE?...IDK...
I guess my thinking is, that who deserves a big extension on a side of a ball that was historically low producing? There are questions that need to be answered at EVERY single position on the offense(outside of maybe RB). To me everyone on offense has something to prove right now...
I will play the Switzerland card and neither be for nor against this, but if it works out I'll take the credit like I knew it was always going to work. Just call me Remy...lol...I KID...

Kmet is getting market price. TE Evan Engram's extension was $42.5/3yrs; $14/per. Engram is Move/U TE more a receiving TE who's a fair blocker. U-TE tend to make more $, but Kmet's '22 receiving stats were similar to Engram's, especially Yards-Per-Reception (Kmet: 10.9 y/r, Engram: 10.5 y/r). So Kmet is really a duo threat TE, which arguably more important to the Bears wide zone run and RPO scheme than straight Move-TE. Kmet can exploit both a LB and a Nickel defender.
Plus, Evan is 29 and Kmet is 24.
Kmet is an important piece to this offense. Kmet is the only TE the Bears have drafted in 5 years... so they didn't have a rookie-contract TE to replace him. Now they have time to draft one.
With the pickup of TE Tonyan, I see Gustey using more 2-TE sets, and with their heavy stretch plays, having one of those 2 slip out for a pass will be tough to defend.
