Wow, that is a huge pick up for the Cubs with out a major price tag. Im sure one day he will be due for a huge pay day, but for now he is prolly playing on a minor league deal or something.

?? WTF. do you not know MLB rules?

We can only hope that one day he will get a big pay day that means he has played 6 great years with the Cubs.

He is cheap but that isnt the main reason we got him we got him because he is young and talented and he will help us win in the future IF he pans out.

Not thrilled about losing Cashner. That said, Rizzo's potential is sky high.

We now have a core to build this team around. A legitimate prospect with power that is close to ready is exactly what this organization needed. Huge plus that he is left handed since this team has lacked a consistent (should read for more than 2 seasons at a time) power threat from the left side of the plate for basically my entire life.

Losing Cashner sucks since he is the only Cubs pitcher within a couple of season with top of the rotation potential, but can't complain given the huge injury questions surrounding Cashner.

I wasn't high on Cashner I never saw him as anything more than a 4 or a 5 as a starter. He could be much better in the pen (which IMO is the best spot for him )

Who is the Padres Closer now?? I bet they view him as a potential closer and if he has the mindset he would do good he has good stuff.

But Rizzo is a no brainier he is a good defender as well as a hitter. So even if he struggles at the dish to start out he wont kill you like some 1B men.

Anyone know much about the other spect?

If you think Cashner's potential is only a 4 or 5, you aren't going to be very happy with what the Cubs have in the pipeline for the next couple of years. The stuff of the Cubs pitching prospects in the upper minors tends to rate out as middle of the rotation as best.

Which is exactly why we have to rebuild instead of going out and getting Prince and trying to contend in the next 3 years. Our system was beyond awful going into this off season. It is gonna take time but it is slowly getting better.

I disagree that it was beyond awful. It lacks impact players particularly at the top levels, but there are a lot of guys that have the potential to be useful major leaguers. And the low minors have some real interesting prospects, but until guys show it at AA I tend not to get too excited about them.

Going into 2011, Brett Jackson was ranked quite a bit higher than Anthony Rizzo on the MLB Top 100 Prospects list by Baseball America. Would this still hold true?

it's obvious Theo likes this guy since he drafted him in Boston. While his MLB experience left much to be desired, he performed VERY well in the minors. Hopefully the Cubs don't have a Gordon Beckham on their hands.

We'll see how this unfolds.

While there's potential for a "Gordon Beckham" outcome, there's also similar potential for Cashner to have a "Mark Prior" outcome. Both players are potential only. The bigger surprise for me is getting their other pitcher for the no-name we threw in.

Probably. They had similar statlines but BJax plays a much more important position.

CO: Cubs will just trade Rizzo for Fielder whenever he signs with somebody.

Boyer said on ESPN 1000 this afternoon that he messed rizzo up by bringing him to the majors last year. He sai Brian is the firstbasemen in 2012 and that he believes Rizzo can still be salvaged. (I'm assuming he meant as a super prospect)

I didn't realize a 22 year old top 100 prospect is a reclamation project.
