Seems like cash exchanging hands is the hang up in announcing it either way. I don't know which way the money is going because either is possible at this point.

Latest update from Brett from Bleacher Nation has a source suggesting a player is being haggled over as well as cash. Seems like this is more than just Marmol for Haren (damn thought it was too good to be true).

From ESPN.com

The Los Angeles Angels have traded right-hander Dan Haren to the Chicago Cubs for closer Carlos Marmol, according to muliple reports.

The move was first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Haren finished 12-13 in 30 starts with a 4.33 ERA last season for the Angels, who had a $15.5 million option on Haren's contract for 2013.

Marmol, who had to waive his no-trade close to accept the deal, was due to make $9.1 million in 2013 in the last year of his three-year, $21 million contract.

Marmol appeared in 61 games for the Cubs in 2012, earning 20 saves and going 3-3 with a 3.42 ERA.

In his seven-year career, all spent in Chicago, Marmol appeared in 452 games, compiling 115 saves, a record of 21-28 and a 3.38 ERA. He was a National League All-Star in 2008. He pitched for the Cubs in the postseason in 2007 and 2008.

ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine contributed to this report.

With less than 3.5 hours left until the deadline for exercising the option, though, the Cubs can probably afford to wait it out a bit longer. Wouldn't be surprised if the other player was a PTBNL.

This feels like the trade deadline with twitter and constantly refreshing MLB Trade Rumors and Bleacher Nation.

Haren has developed chronic back problems but maybe he can show some form of when he dominated the NL.

I would do it except it feels like something BN and Cubs Den and the other blogs are all over. The only angle I think I would have on this is adding another veteran split finger pitcher as an influence for Samardzija.

Cubs get an upgrade in their rotation and we don't have to watch Marmol blow games w/ his awful control? I'm liking this offseason already :yep:

Getting an effective starter for a largely ineffective reliever is a good deal.

The Cubs basically spent no money to get a reclamation project who has the potential to be solid again. It's definitely :fap: worthy.

Sure but that was Haren at his worst. Sure there is no guarantee that he returns to previous form, though Haren's number were ballooned a bit with a 27 runs in 23 inning stretch while trying to pitch through being hurt. If he is the guy he was last year which is 180 innings of roughly league average starter. That is trading a reliever for a starter. The Cubs made out really well if this deal does happen.
