Speaking as a guy that used to LOVE baseball and now watches one or two games a year….

These players and owners have ruined baseball.

13 year contracts? LOLOLOLOLOL

Fucking fools. They’re killing the sport.
Why would the length of the contracts impact the actual game itself when watching? Idk what half the guys on the Cubs payroll make, nor do I care. I still enjoy watching the games when I can.

I don't like the long term deals for a multitude of reasons but the biggest being the fact that the guys out there this year are not "baseball young", more like middle aged. There is always the danger that they start to decline when your team is on the rise and ready to challenge for a WS. I don't think they will be ready to make a big move until we see what they have in PCA, Davis, Alcantana, Wicks and Horton....adding a 30ish, highly overpriced "star" for a decade at this point is much more of a gamble than a wise move.

You make a shitty signing and you’re stuck with him. (For a really long time) Part of what makes the NFL great is the player/roster turnover and salary cap means you have 32 fan bases invested year round in their teams.

You also don’t have easy access to games on TV anymore so you’re losing all the young fans. I grew up in a household with every Cubs game on in the background on WGN. Kids don’t get that now.

Yea man, I like Correa but 13 years. Na, fam.

I dont want Swanson if its for more than 6 or 7.

I dont care how much they pay them a year. I care about length. I have seen this dog and pony show of lengthy contracts and they usually suck.

You give 13 year deals to players like Soto. Someone who hits FA at 25 not 28/29 with a history of injuries.

Everything the White Sox fan trolled you guys about last off-season came true.

Everything that was returned in venom about the White Sox came true.

Lol. Goddamn both these ownership groups.

God, DAMN them.

I fully expect the Cubs to still make a run for Dansby or a shortstop in the trade market. They still need a catcher, first basement, and probably another starting pitcher.

The only thing we aren't getting is the Corre/Turner/Bogaerts sweepstakes. It is a setback but I am forgiving considering the length of these stupid deals.

I'd rather pay a dumb contract then dump a bunch of prospects for a single piece on a team that's depleted of talent. Also on top of catcher, first base and potentially another SP, don't forget a 3b and multiple BP arms as well

IDK my take is sorta i think it is dumb to sign players for that long. I get why it happens but nonetheless dumb. People really went hard into the narrative that the cubs had to get a SS but thing is Nico was really strong there last season. Granted he could have moved to 2B but I still really like Madrigal. And the cubs have *a lot* of middle infield prospects coming. So committing to someone for a decade when you have good prospects coming to me only makes sense if you view it as a win now kinda thing.

Same here. I have no interest in watching a team in fourth place and trying to make myself feel better that “at least we’re not paying Bobby Bonilla $1 million once a year”

Let’s face it, we are currently sitting in a situation where the best case scenario is going to be the equivalent of getting socks for Christmas.

They do have a good prospects coming and even though it will be a while that’s why I having somebody for 4-5 years wouldn’t have been a big problem or that guy could move the third. 10, 11 or 13 years is certainly a big difference but they’re always movable too.

But Madrigal?

Well, now that I'm in my 30s I do welcome underwear and socks for Christmas. Maybe re-work this analogy lol
I miss my grandma giving me money, socks, and a wallet every christmas. I never realized how bad I beat up my wallets until she passed.

But Madrigal?

The Cubs piece on Hernandez pretty much promoted him as able to play any position. So I would not box him in anywhere. Guy like that bleeds talent.

I will just say this.

Swanson makes up the middle 3 gold glove quality players. The fWAR on the D side alone should keep the Cubs in games.

What happens down the road really doesn't matter much. Prospects bust or move positions to get in. 2 years ago we were looking at Davis as a CF lock. Now a after thought to PCA.

So Jed should keep it gearing up for 2023. If pushing a GG quality backbone is what gets you wins then do it and not worry about 2024+
