Addison Reed to the Twins 2/$17 mil. Too bad he was the last reliever I had any interest in. Still I like our pen so it's not the end of the world.

I'm curious if that entirely takes them out on Darvish. Their opening day payroll last year was $108 mil and they've never been above $113 mil. Prior to that signing their projected total was $97 mil. So, assuming that's evenly divided at $8.5 mil per that puts them in the $105.5 mil range.

I think it does. The rumor is that they've gotten in on Lance Lynn.

Wow @ that cole trade. That seems really low. Moran is like a league average type unless you REALLY buy his draft status. Musgrove is ok but he's never been a big time prospect.

The Astros will acquire right-hander Gerrit Cole from the Pirates for righty Joe Musgrove and third baseman Colin Moran, Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reports (Twitter link).

Also presumably that takes out houston and minny on darvish now. Leaves what the yankees and dodgers who both seem pretty cash strapped and the rangers who don't seem that interested either.

Ken Rosenthal

@Ken_Rosenthal
Source: RHP Michael Feliz also heading to the #Pirates in the Cole trade, along with Moran and Musgrove.

That's a little bit better i suppose but still not an amazing return.

I'm pretty sure teams are pretty much getting ready for S/T right now and are moving on from the hold out from Darvish and Arrieta. I can honestly see Minn signing
cobb right now honestly. 16.75 MM is pretty much 8.38 AAV Darvish would be around 26 AAV to sign. Cobb is projected at 18 AAV. The math adds up to get both at the same price as Darvish or Jake right now. It is a smart direction for them.

Yank/Dodgers are just lurkers and would have to dump contract at this point to even entertain the idea. No team wants their baggage.

It is honestly the Cubs to lose right now.

Cole has sub performed also

I think he's just had bad results. His career 8.44/2.34/0.77 k/bb/hr per 9 is pretty good as is his 3.50/3.27 ERA/FIP. Is he an ace right now? Probably not and more of a 2/3. But Quintana is 7.80/2.41/0.85 with a 3.53/3.51 ERA/FIP and none of the players houston gave up are anywhere close to the level of Eloy.

I dont think the Yanks are a threat to Darvish. Darvish didnt even remember them offering him anything. Then, he retracted and said they did but the report on what they offered is false

They would have to sell all of Ellsbury for D rated prospects to create the payroll

This is starting to feel like the cubs are just looking to resign Arrieta at a low cost, maybe even get him to sign a 1 yr deal like Fowler did and test market next year...
Maybe more teams get involved (Yankees Dodgers) and luxery tax goes up more..

I’m really doubting this. They just don’t want to absorb decline years at premium cost.

It is a impass. These players want contracts to lock them up past 36 at over valued rated and teams do not to pay 25-30 mil for Lacky type production

That my point..

Epstein not gonna give on to the extra year or 2...

So Arrieta either takes the 3 or 4 yr deal with a chip on his shoulder or takes a 1 yr deal with a team and tries again next year...

Honestly if the price points and years are comparable I'd still rather darvish not just because i think he's the better bet(arrieta's peak is great but he's not been consistent and probably never will be) but also because Darvish doesn't cost a pick and if and when Arrieta does sign the cubs will gain one. For a team needing badly to restock their farm system that's a big deal.
