MESA, Ariz. -- Chicago Cubs top prospect Javier Baez is closer to playing second or third base in a spring game after several days of morning practice at those positions.

Expect him to start at second before long. "We're going to make sure when we put him there he's really comfortable and confident he can handle that side of the diamond," manager Rick Renteria said on Tuesday. "I think he's pretty close. It's going to happen, sure."

Baez is a shortstop by trade but with former All-Star Starlin Castro playing the same position the Cubs are preparing Baez for an eventual call-up to the big leagues. He'll start the season at shortstop at Triple-A Iowa but when he makes it to Wrigley Field it could be at second or third.

"We talked about it today," Baez said. "They told me eventually I'm going to play third or second soon. That's what we're working on."

Baez believes the transition to second would be easier for him and that's most likely where he'll see action this spring. Ironically, with Castro out of the lineup with a tight hamstring, Baez could be at second while regular second baseman Darwin Barney plays shortstop.

"Barney was actually a pretty good shortstop in college, and we think we would do a pretty good job with him," Renteria said. "We want to have someone with experience on the other side."

So Barney could help groom his replacement while making himself more valuable as a defensive player at both positions. It's another indication that the Cubs believe Baez is getting close to making it to the major leagues. He has two home runs this spring to go along with a .333 batting average in 18 at-bats. But that's all been at shortstop. If he was struggling in any part of the game the Cubs wouldn't add another layer of learning for him this spring.

"I'm ready for whatever they want me to do," Baez said. "I'm feeling more comfortable there (at second.)"

If Baez ends up as the 2Bmen, could he be compared favorably to a Robinson Cano and possibly put up numbers like this..

.300 AVG. .350 OBP .500 SLG .860 OPS 25 HR 90 RBI 10 SB

Nice to see the reasonable and realistic expectations fans have.

never said anything about what my expectations were of him..

I simply asked opinions of others if they thought he could possibly put up numbers compared to cano ..

it was a pretty simple and reasonable question to ask after this article came out to other fans who just want to have discussions on here..
there no right or wrong answers , just opinions and baseball talk..

He has more power than Cano. Power won't be the concern. Can he walk, that is the question. His bat speed will always allow for a higher babip than normal

yes I can see his low BB total and Ks keeping his AVG and OBP under Cano but his power numbers should be right there..

Those numbers aren't insanely unreasonable... I'm not expecting him to bat .300 though. Lower the OBP a bit too, but the rest is pretty reasonable pprojection for a prospect of his caliber, which is not to call it a guarantee by any stretch of the imagination.

Possible and reasonable are not the same.

I don't think it is reasonable to project any prospect who has barely dented AA ball to be a .300 .860 OPS player in the major leagues.

Sure it is possible but not a reasonable expectation. There were only 19 players in all of baseball who topped .860 in OPS.

Your correct except for one thing, it wasnt a projection.

It was a question asked if he could possibly put up numbers compared to Cano.

So, quit over exaggerating things...........

Well sounds like Barney will be playing SS while Baez is at 2B. So already molding his replacement.

It looking like a IF of Bryant/Castro/Baez/Rizzo by 2015.

Now I wouldn't talk about Cano and Baez but talking about Baez being a upgrade to Barney is legit talk.

I would be happy if he hit 20 HR's as a 2B. Leave it at that.

And I gave you an answer that it's not likely and a pretty dumb question for someone who has barely dented AA.

So quit acting like a teenage girl with sand in her va jay jay because someone said that Twilight sucked.

If Baez only tops out at 20 homeruns a season, he is probably batting somewhere around .200.

So i never put 2 and 2 together before but today I found out that Eric Jokisch went to the same high school as I did. I didn't really know him as I'm 6 years older but I think I played football with some of his relatives. Not a huge deal and all but the high school we're talking about had around 100-150 in the 4 grades combined. My graduating class was 35 IIRC. So, to have someone who's actually on the fringe prospect status is pretty cool. Definitely got someone to root for to make it despite the odds.

I wouldn't go that far. He started to improve his hitting by going to RF. That is when his production started to jump. Now if they give him a diet of outside pitches and he gets 20 HR's and 40 2B's that is solid production out of 2B.

If he is hitting .200 he will get more time in AAA.

I like him. He knows how to pitch and used both sides of the plate. Add to it he has been working with Wood on how to throw a cutter. He has potential as a 2nd LH starter down the road.

His chances are a little better than Hendricks due to him being LH.

He is a better option than Rusin...

Eric Jagielo garduated a few years ahead of me, Cubs drafted him straight from the HS (last round) before he went to ND then the Yanks.

I am from Slidell and for being a smallish town we have put out some pro's out my age group. I know Logan Morrison decently. I know Xavier Paul decently. I grew up with Matt Forte. I know Mike Fontenot. I dont really know Ryan Eades, but I was coached by his dad at one point. His dad was a great coach. State champion coach in baseball. He past away awhile ago. Slidell has put out some really good athletes for the size.
