I love discussing the problem of ifs with prospects in the minor leagues versus a player that is retired at this point. Clearly can tell you which one offers more value to the Cubs in 2014.

More IF's.

WHEN Villanueva or Hendricks gets traded for something, then we can discuss what kinda of value there is.

Everyone loves to place the best case scenario if's but refuse to acknowledge that there are also if's where something good doesn't happen.

What if Edwards or Villanueva got traded for different prospects that never make the major leagues?

What then?

They still would have produced zero major league value, which is exactly the same as Dempster.

A $20 bill that sits in a desk and never gets used has the same value as a blank piece of notebook paper.

Luis Valbuena started last year also.

How great was his value to the team??

And I will worry about Ramirez and Edwards IF they make it to the majors.

But with Edwards, you have already stated that a #4/5 type starter has less value than an everyday player.

Wow, that was the biggest stretch Job ever and it still made absolutely no sense. Convo done. Wow!

Well first off, he is not retired.

He simply stated he didn't want to pitch this season due to neck issues and a desire to be with his family.

So there is an IF that he could change his mind and decide to pitch again which is probably not a much bigger IF than the prospects coming to Chicago and being productive.

I love discussing a topic with people who aren't even accurate in what they say.

Valbuena has enough value to this team that Barney will likely get traded. You're essentially saying any of the field players that didn't get traded have zero value.

They cut Murphy. Take it for what it is. If Valbuena and Olt out perform Barney then Barney most likely is sitting on the short end of a platoon at best at 2B.

But nothing has happened yet. Let see how it plays out.

One thing I like is Rick lets the players production dictate who gets jobs or not. 2 contracts were cut and 2 NRI's got their jobs. That was due to performance in S/T. About time we got a manager who gets the basic concept of performance = job vs contract = job.

He makes a point.

Player in AAA= 0 Cubs wins.
Dempster on DL = O Cubs wins.

If Hendricks makes it and wins games then he said he will revisit it.

Pretty logical if you ask me.

It wasn't prospect = trash.

No, but it was 2 prospects = Dempster = Worthless. Even if the two never play in the Majors, they still hold the value of being able to be an injury replacement (even if it never happens) or being part of a trade.

This reminds me of the Wood issue.

Marshall was one of the top set ups. Wood was a flop at that point.

Wood proved himself last year. The year before he looked like crap.

Production determines value not what if's.

On injury replacements? Come on now. AAA are full of those. What is the point of trading for one?

The Garza trade I get. The talent was legit and we are seeing Olt already out of it.

When Hendricks is a "productive" part of the rotation then this will be revisited.

Now I "believe" he will make it. He has proven that he can win games and the Cubs are not willing to pay top dollar on pitching. And there is no one better close to the team. (calling him Randy Wells 2.0)

Ramirez is another one but I believe he will end up in the pen. His SO/9 has been excellent and this spring he seemed to fit into a short relief role very well.

The angry poster had to set up a straw man to make that point.

What JNTG said. He is saying these prospects hold the same value as a retired Dempster which is not true. They hold value. Dempster holds nothing. You cant trade anything for Dempster. You can trade or play these players. It wasnt logical at all. Maybe you misread it.

The whole discussion was about how much value they hold to a major league team this year.
To use your beak down..

Players in AAA = real chance to get brought up this year and provide something = value

Dempster injured/semi retired = sitting at home / out of baseball = no value

Giving up Barney for minor league depth at best is not adding value to the organization.

Barney will not get anyone back that has a reasonable much less realistic chance of making an impact at the major league level ever.

They will end up giving up a major league player, albeit a very bad major league player, for minor league filler.

Trading a $1 bill for two quarters is not good value.

You are assuming, as usual, that it is a 100% chance that Dempster doesn't play this year. Maybe he wants to come back at the All Star Game.

As usual you are taking the best case what if's that help you and the worst case what if's that you argue against and refuse to accept that there are other outcomes.

What if Dempster comes back and pitches the second half of the season and neither Hendricks or Villanueva dont make it to Chicago?

That is why I am saying you have to wait before declaring it decided one way or the other.
