Kalish earned it also. I was not impressed by what Sweeney did this spring.

When you are dealing with a roster of unproven it is better to let performance dictate jobs. Sweeney IMO was signed to a deal when he really did not prove anything last year to justify it. And this spring he did nothing to prove he belongs on a major league roster. Not a fan of it. So ya Kalish may take over his role.

I'm partial towards Bonifacio playing CF leading off and Valbuena and Barney platooning at 2B. Valbuena and Olt are good for SLG and both carry solid BB% over their careers (minor league/major league) With Barney getting reps at SS he becomes a good option to back up SS or Bonifacio there and Kalish or Ruggiano in the line up.

I believe this year will be more of a flip from the past two years. I believe the O will generate more runs than the past. Around middle of the pack. But I do not expect the pitching will hold up its end.

Wood? Shark? Hammel? Jackson? None of them are proven commodities. They got lucky with Feldman and Garza had a good year last year. Wood was a surprise. Even if Jackson bounces back to his career norms it does little to offset losing Garza and Feldman's production last year. Arreta starting on the DL. Another unproven.

Pen? Veras not sure of. Crossing my fingers here that it works out.

Mike Lowell went over it with Harold Reynolds. Renoylds went over the pivot at 2B and Lowell talked about how 3B is more about triangulation and knowing the right angle to intercept the ball.

Other words being able to fade back at a angle vs cut towards the bag.

So if you move 3 steps. in is towards the ball lessening intercept time. Fading back to the line gives more time to intercept the ball.

So ya it has alot to do with physics.

Of course it has to do with physics. All bodies everywhere have to do with physics. That has nothing to do with triangulation.

Triangulation is when when you "view" an object from 3 locations to determine its location. No human can triangulate a moving object with their eyes. No one triangulates anything on the diamond.

The reality is if someone can learn the footwork at SS and 2B, they can learn it for 3rd. Just because it is different does not mean it is unlearnable.

I wan to see Baez some place that is not 2B. I think his arm is too good for 2b. You can disagree. Just don't blow smoke up my ass. 3B is not sending a man too the moon and SS tiddlywinks. If he can learn one he can learn the other as long as he has the arm and quickness. He looks to have both.

You are assuming, as usual, that it is a 100% chance that Dempster doesn't play this year. Maybe he wants to come back at the All Star Game.

As usual you are taking the best case what if's that help you and the worst case what if's that you argue against and refuse to accept that there are other outcomes.

What if Dempster comes back and pitches the second half of the season and neither Hendricks or Villanueva dont make it to Chicago?

That is why I am saying you have to wait before declaring it decided one way or the other.

MESA, Ariz. -- Mike Olt, who battled vision problems last year, and Ryan Kalish, sidelined all of 2013 because of an injury, both made the Cubs' Opening Day roster, and Ryan Roberts and Chris Coghlan were told Thursday that they did not.

General manager Jed Hoyer announced the final position player decisions and said the pitching staff is still to be determined. The Cubs have 16 pitchers in camp, including three who will likely open on the disabled list in Kyuji Fujikawa, James McDonald and Jake Arrieta. The plan is to carry 12 pitchers, including five starters, Hoyer said.

Carlos Villanueva and Chris Rusin have battled for the fifth starter spot, and one option was to use Villanueva as a swingman, especially with off-days in April. Hoyer said they want the rotation set.

"We're going to go with five starters," Hoyer said. "We're not going to go with four, and use the off days."

The Cubs have exhibition games Friday and Saturday at Chase Field against the D-backs.

Roberts has requested and been granted his release, and is now a free agent. Coghlan was headed to Triple-A Iowa.

Both Olt and Kalish showed their resiliency in coming back from injuries.

"We felt Olt really showed us a lot this spring and the way [Olt] swung the bat was really impressive and we liked the work he's done at third," Hoyer said. "We loved the way Kalish played all spring. He's got great energy, can play all three outfield positions and gives us another left-handed bat. We're really happy with the guys we kept and we're really happy with their springs, but they were hard [decisions], because Chris and Ryan Roberts played well."

Manager Rick Renteria said Olt and Luis Valbuena will share third, and Hoyer said the two players give the Cubs options in the lineup.

"[Olt] had a great spring with the bat, his at-bats were very good, patient, aggressive, his swings were aggressive and he did a lot of damage and drove in a lot of runs," Hoyer said. "It was pretty clear if he was able to play third and get enough innings in and get enough reps, it was clear we wanted his bat in Wrigley."

The Cubs acquired Olt last July in the Matt Garza trade. They tried to include him in a deal in July 2012 when Chicago sent Ryan Dempster to Texas, but the Rangers said no.

A first-round pick by the Rangers in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, Olt began 2013 at Triple-A Round Rock, and was batting .139 on April 25 when he asked for some help. In November 2012, he was hit in the head while playing in the Dominican Republic winter league, and was having problems seeing. He's overcome the vision problems, and battled a tender right shoulder this spring in camp.

"We're excited for Mike," Hoyer said. "I think he's proved himself here in Spring Training, but he probably feels like he's got a lot more to prove. This is the exhibition season and now we have to go play real games. I'm excited for him that he was able to come in here and do what he did in Spring Training."

Kalish gives the Cubs another left-handed hitting outfielder, along with Nate Schierholtz and Ryan Sweeney.

"I like the right-handed bats we have, but we'll be able to mix and match a little bit depending on the starting pitcher and depending on the game," Hoyer said.

Hoyer and Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein knew Kalish from their days together in Boston. A ninth-round Draft pick in 2006, Kalish was injured after colliding with an outfield wall in April 2011. He eventually needed cervical fusion surgery, which involves the removal of a disc in his neck, and the insertion of a metal plate. It's the same surgery Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had, and Kalish had the same doctor, spinal specialist Robert Watkins, and even stayed in the same hospital room.

"He's a solid defender, runs well, puts together a great at-bat, whether it's against righties or lefties," Renteria said. "He had been down for awhile with different issues over the past couple years and he's extremely happy to be a part of the organization and part of the club. He did a nice job this spring."

The Cubs also are expected to add non-roster invitee Emilio Bonifacio to the Opening Day roster. He would join Olt, Kalish and Welington Castillo, John Baker, Anthony Rizzo, Darwin Barney, Starlin Castro, Valbuena, Schierholtz, Sweeney, Junior Lake, and Justin Ruggiano.

This is the part that I liked. It looks like he will get a chance to play a lot. Hopefully, he can take advantage of this opportunity and become a staple at third for the next 6 years.

I don't think anyone has guaranteed that Olt will become a beast, just like nobody guaranteed (or even thought in most cases) Stewart would. But one player failing also doesn't mean a completely different individual will.

Big difference between stewart and olt...
Stewart was a change of scenery hope , Olt a year ago was one of the top prospect in baseball..
which I'm sure you were hoping the cubs had gottem him last year when they were dealing Dempster to Texas and probably threw one of your fits when they didn't.

It was said a couple of years ago on the CBS site. I can attest to that as well as Silence and a few others can also.

everyone said that he had a chance to be good. The issue is that some people are negative about every young player/prospect and then praise themselves for being right when the guy fails. Most prospects fail. It is nothing to say they all suck and then beat your chest when most do.

the constant negative comments tends to push people who are not negative into defending players. That in turn makes people of low intelligence think that because some said something like:

We don't know if he is going to be good or not, let's wait and see.

Into:

He is the next MVP.

Then after the fact, the IQ folks come back around and pretend like everyone was slurping up everything; when 95% of the time it was just measured responses and expectations.

Inherently , some people are more positive and some are more negative. There is no reason to pretend like anyone was ever calling Stewart anything more than a guy who had a chance to be a decent defender with ok power.

He did not pan out. Not every move works. Get over it.

This also isn't CBS

Nobody said it was said only here, just that it was said.

I see you are back to responding to statements that no one ever said.

Keep up the good work.

Revisionist history at it's finest.

Many people go totally overboard on their statements and expectations regarding the chances of prospects success but since that is what the sheep wish to believe that equals measured responses and expectations? LOL!!!!

Many people have mentioned the Cubs will end up with 3 All Star players from the current crop of prospects.

I guess that is measured responses and expectations huh?
