So, your knock on him is he doesnt steal enough bags to go with a line conceivably this year that can be 20 homer and 40 doubles. You also stick with OBP when wOBA is the better way to go. Not all bags are created equal. The premise was that Clemente did not walk much and showed little power 5 years into the league then bursted through. I compared them because they walk at the same rate and seem to similar type hitters. Clemente never stole more then like 12 bags in a season. Numbers do not tell where a player will be the next year. Also, Castro BABIP is signficantly down from his career average even this year.

Clemente hit for a much higher average. I mean if you want to talk wOBA that's fine. It's probably a better metric like you said. However, Clemente is a career .365. Castro is a career .319 wOBA. As for Castro's BABIP, significantly down from what? His 2012 season his BABIP was .315. This season is .303. That's not statistically significant. If you're saying it's down from his first two years then yeah. You're right. His first 2 years he was a .300 hitter. The past 3 he's not been above .283. That's not a small sample size either. You're talking about 1657 PAs.

If the situation were flipped and he'd started out as a .283 hitter and the past 2 years he'd been a .300 hitter I can see that more as a positive sign. And I can buy the concept of just having a bad year. So, I'm willing to throw out his 2013 year as just whatever. But even then in 2012 and 2014 thus far the numbers are down. Also, he's gone from 25 steals in 2012 to 9 last year to 1 in close to half of a year.

So, like I said, I can buy you're concept of adding more power. But, that seems to be coming at a cost to his stolen base count which honestly isn't that surprising. It happens to a lower of SS who add power. Additionally, Clemente had multiple elite defensive seasons. Castro really hasn't changed much. He's been around average most of his career.

Again, I'm not saying Castro is a bad player. He's an above average player. But if you're trying to argue he's an elite player or going to be an elite player you're going to have to give me something here. Rollins and Jeter were elite guys with similar profiles to Castro and both were 25/30 guys. Castro hasn't had a season with either 25 HRs yet or 30 steals. And while I can humor the argument he'll get to 20-25 HRs this year he's not getting both. That's the difference between an above average player and an elite player.

How does one lose most of his speed and he's not even 25 yet? Makes no sense.
need more then speed to steal bases, need to know how to read pitchers and get good jumps.. which he no good at and before anyone jumps on him for that, there been plenty of speedy guys like that...

you can see he fast just by how he gets to foul pops, etc. that most SS dont get to, and by how he runs bases..

PITTSBURGH -- The Cubs signed first-round pick Kyle Schwarber to a $3.125 million deal, which is under slot, and he will get started right away, joining Class A Boise for its opener Friday.

The Indiana catcher was selected fourth overall in the First-Year Player Draft last Thursday.

The Cubs had an allotment of $4.6 million for their first-round pick. By signing Schwarber below slot, the Cubs were expected to use the extra money on some of the pitchers they selected in the Draft, such as high schoolers Carson Sands, Justin Steele and Dylan Cease, who were picked in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds, respectively.

Schwarber, considered the best college bat in the Draft, was in Chicago this week to undergo a physical and meet with Cubs officials. He tweeted on Sunday that he was "Chicago bound" and asked for recommendations on places to eat in the city.

This is the third straight year the Cubs have picked a position player in the first round of the Draft.

Schwarber, 21, is one of three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, presented to the top Division I catcher in the country. He batted .358 with 14 home runs, 48 RBIs and a .659 slugging percentage in his junior year at Indiana. In his final eight games for the Hoosiers, he batted .469 with four home runs, 12 RBIs and a .938 slugging percentage.

A native of Middletown, Ohio, Schwarber posted a .992 fielding percentage this season, and threw out 16 of 43 (37 percent) of attempted basestealers. Last year, he was named the top catcher in the country and a First Team All-American by Perfect Game and the NCBWA after hitting .366 with 18 home runs and 54 RBIs in 61 games.

He hasnt lost his speed. Its about the same. He just stopped stealing bags. He wasnt very good at it to begin with. Stealing bags means nothing if you are getting caught half the time.
Thanks, Captain Obvi....er, I mean SilenceS.

LOL. I absolutely agree with you. That's why someone "losing speed" before they are 25 made no sense to me. He just wasn't a very good base stealer and it is an art.

@IowaCubsGameDay: I-Cubs win 4-3! Hendricks(7-5) gets the win, Hatley picks up his first save and Baez blasts his 10th HR.

Best case is what they did with Bryant and him hitting AFL. Most you can expect.

FLA is sucking right now. Team is crap. They could use a bat worth a damn. Almora and Vogi are meh this year. Not sure if it is playing in Fla but they regressed from Kane CO.
