So, your knock on him is he doesnt steal enough bags to go with a line conceivably this year that can be 20 homer and 40 doubles. You also stick with OBP when wOBA is the better way to go. Not all bags are created equal. The premise was that Clemente did not walk much and showed little power 5 years into the league then bursted through. I compared them because they walk at the same rate and seem to similar type hitters. Clemente never stole more then like 12 bags in a season. Numbers do not tell where a player will be the next year. Also, Castro BABIP is signficantly down from his career average even this year.
Clemente hit for a much higher average. I mean if you want to talk wOBA that's fine. It's probably a better metric like you said. However, Clemente is a career .365. Castro is a career .319 wOBA. As for Castro's BABIP, significantly down from what? His 2012 season his BABIP was .315. This season is .303. That's not statistically significant. If you're saying it's down from his first two years then yeah. You're right. His first 2 years he was a .300 hitter. The past 3 he's not been above .283. That's not a small sample size either. You're talking about 1657 PAs.
If the situation were flipped and he'd started out as a .283 hitter and the past 2 years he'd been a .300 hitter I can see that more as a positive sign. And I can buy the concept of just having a bad year. So, I'm willing to throw out his 2013 year as just whatever. But even then in 2012 and 2014 thus far the numbers are down. Also, he's gone from 25 steals in 2012 to 9 last year to 1 in close to half of a year.
So, like I said, I can buy you're concept of adding more power. But, that seems to be coming at a cost to his stolen base count which honestly isn't that surprising. It happens to a lower of SS who add power. Additionally, Clemente had multiple elite defensive seasons. Castro really hasn't changed much. He's been around average most of his career.
Again, I'm not saying Castro is a bad player. He's an above average player. But if you're trying to argue he's an elite player or going to be an elite player you're going to have to give me something here. Rollins and Jeter were elite guys with similar profiles to Castro and both were 25/30 guys. Castro hasn't had a season with either 25 HRs yet or 30 steals. And while I can humor the argument he'll get to 20-25 HRs this year he's not getting both. That's the difference between an above average player and an elite player.
