What the Cubs promoted someone? That can't be because clearly the Cubs goal is to keep all their players in the minors as long as possible.

I know who you taking a jab out, but I couldnt understand why he went to Boise. Just seemed like a senseless place to send him. People knew he was to far advanced for that competition.

Couldn't resist it. Honestly I was surprised that he didn't spend any time in Arizona and then went to full season ball. The best facilities in the organization is there. Manny is still there. The fact that they had him bypass that completely surprised me a bit.

If I had to guess, after a short layoff between college/signing, they wanted him to get some live game BP before sending him to the daily grind.

CHICAGO -- As days go for the Chicago Cubs and their fan base, Wednesday was one of the good ones and not just because they won their second consecutive road series while completing a long trip with a 5-5 record.

The bigger steps in the rebuilding organization came when they promoted slugger Kris Bryant along with pitchers Arodys Vizcaino and Armando Rivero to Triple-A Iowa. A smaller step happened the day before when 2014 first-round pick Kyle Schwarber was sent to Single-A Kane County after ripping up Northwest League pitching for a few days.

Kris Bryant made quick work of Double-A and earned a promotion to Triple-A Iowa.
The Cubs are on the move, but when it has a real effect in the major league standings is still anyone's guess. Javier Baez, Bryant, Vizcaino and others are just a phone call away from making it to Wrigley Field and that's when the real progress begins. Could we see any of them in the majors before year's end? At the very least the answer is a fluid one.

The only drawback to a Baez and Bryant September call-up involves service time. A player who accrues 172 days on the 25-man roster during the season uses up a year toward free agency. There's about 183 days in a baseball season so a team can avoid using up a year by calling up a player a few weeks into the season. The Houston Astros took this approach with prospect George Springer this season.

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo had a similiar path as he accrued just under 172 days of service after his first two call-ups in the majors, once for the San Diego Padres in 2011 and once for the Cubs in 2012. The Cubs also avoided Super Two status with him by calling him up in late June 2012.

Then there's the Super Two status in regards to arbitration. Avoiding arbitration after two years instead of three involves a July call-up.

The details aren't as important as knowing this: If the Cubs want to save money down the line and still call them up in September, then they'll need to tack on those days to playing time in the minor leagues next season, unless the Cubs simply plan on starting them out of spring training, and that's not likely.

For example, 22 days of time in the big leagues this year basically means 22 more days in the minors next year to avoid a year toward free agency and/or Super Two status. It might be worth it as the Cubs could leave a player such as Bryant in the minors for that long anyway. If both Baez and Bryant are actually going to break camp with the Cubs next spring then getting them a cup of coffee with the team this season makes sense because service time won't matter. Most likely you'll see both next season but not out of the gate.

However, team sources indicate the recent promotions aren't part of some long-term plan that was locked in months ago. Yes, the Bryant promotion made sense as the Southern League took its all-star break, but Schwarber and Bryant were on track to spend more time on their respective teams.

The Cubs obviously changed their minds when they concluded there was little more Schwarber needed to do to get his timing down while playing for the Class-A Boise Hawks so he got promoted after just a few days. And Bryant long ago proved he needed a bigger challenge than Double-A pitching, leading the Southern League in batting average (.355), home runs (22), RBIs (58), on-base percentage (.458) and slugging (.702).

So even if the Cubs aren't planning a call-up for their major prospects, it doesn't mean they can't change their minds. That's assuming performance dictates a promotion of course. Bryant, in particular, has proven to be a fast learner. If his history has shown anything it's that he'll have an adjustment period at Iowa then once again prove he's a special hitter by turning the tables on Triple-A pitching.

If individual prospects are being dubbed as saviors then Bryant is the face of the movement right now. His ability, work ethic and attitude are unmatched in the Cubs organization, and he could be the next great player in the major leagues. Of course, Baez was thought of in similar fashion until his struggles in Iowa this season so Bryant has one more thing to prove.

A reliever such as Vizcaino or a starter like Kyle Hendricks are more likely to see the major leagues sooner rather than later. Impending trades should open a few spots on the staff and a player such as Vizcaino was only really in the minors to get innings in after missing so much time with arm injuries. His sub-2.00 ERA this season combined with his electric arm screams another promotion before season's end. Hendricks might simply get a chance because he's next up among those getting ready to make their debuts.

Yes, Wednesday was a good day, but minor-league promotions should never be the headline makers they are for the Cubs. The next time the Cubs make that kind of news should finally have a real effect on the long-term plan because we'll see some of these players at Wrigley Field.

Then we'll really start to find out if the front office has chosen the right talent for their infamous rebuilding strategy. Until then they're just minor league players, as much as they do generate headlines.

So, I brought this up on another site and some posters got what I am saying. So, people are all about trading Castro. I was looking around and I came across Roberto Clemente stats.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/castrst01.shtml

Top is Clemente stats and under him is Castro. I bet the Pirates were glad they did not traded him. I am not comparing Castro as the next Clemente. What I am trying to say is development happens at the majors. Castro has move development in him. He will be 25 next year and that when Clemente exploded. This is why I am so against trading Castro. He still has insane eye to hand coordination in the box and the power has been much better this year. He is on pace for over 40 doubles and over 20 homers. That is fucking great for a SS in this league. This is why I say the internet is trying to ruin baseball. People think if a player isnt a star by 21 like Trout then he never will be. It doesnt make sense. People grow and learn at different rates. It takes the light bulb to go off to put it all together. I would take my chances with Castro for the next couple of years.

I agree. The Cubs would be nuts to trade Castro right now.

Guy will finish the season with closer to 900 hits at age 24, and fans here want him gone. Huh?

He is hitting well this year, and his defense has improved. he has his head out of his arse for once. Why trade him?

The only reason you trade him is if you have better players. Perhaps it's premature to suggest Baez and Alcantara will be but that's the opinion some have. It's not that outrageous. Alcantara is hitting .278/.321/.508 with 8 homers and 14 steals as a switch hitter in 274 PAs. Castro is hitting .291/.333/.482 with 10 homers and 2 steals. And fair enough that is AAA vs MLB but you can make the argument that Alcantara is a better combo of speed and power. Alcantara has also shown the ability to walk at a 11% rate which Castro has never done. So, you can argue that Alcantara could have a surge in OBP. As for Baez, I don't think I really need to go into his potential. The question is does his defense play at SS? If it does then you have a decision to make because him playing 2B makes Alcantara have to move. Baez may also play 3B and Alcantara may also play OF but it's a move none the less for someone.

The problem some have is less about Castro and more about the best possible fits. Castro is good but not great when you consider his position. He's 6th in OBP for SS. He's 5th in HRs. He's 23rd in the defense metric fangraphs uses. Again, not bad numbers. People just see Baez's potential to be a Tulow or better level hitter. They see Alcantara as a better power/speed combo. Baez and Alcantara may never get there in which case it's a moot point. But, if they do then Castro is a pretty valuable trade piece to potentially add some other part. Alcantara for example isn't worth as much because he can't play SS well enough to stick there long term. Baez is obviously a piece they wouldn't trade if he reaches his potential.

Honestly, in some ways I'm glad Baez has struggled in AAA some because I really like Alcantara's potential and I think Baez struggling in AAA might be enough to give Alcantara some actual time at 2B for the cubs this year to get a look. I think Alcantara may end up a better pro player than Almora and Soler. I wouldn't mind seeing Alcantara at 2B, Baez at 3B and Castro sticking at SS with Bryant having to play for the OF. What I worried about coming into the year was that Baez would dominate again, get called up and play 2B and stick there long term. That would in turn force Alcantara to either switch positions or be traded. And given I think he may be better than Almora I was worried they would deal him away and some other team would get a great player. Additionally, Alcantara being a switch hitter would help some of the issues the cubs have with being heavy right handed in terms of their top players. Add in potentially Schwarber to Rizzo and they have at least some what decent mix with 3 lefties.

funny that some of the ones wanting to move Castro now to open up a spot for baez are the same ones who say we shouldn't get excited about prospects til they do something.

Castro not going anywhere at least until 2015 off season if then..

I think they want to see how castro rizzo baez bryant Alcantara all play together first before they make a decision on who to move if needed, along with castillo and whoever 2 they have playing everyday this has the potential of being a young exciting team to watch next year..

They do not have a legit CF until Almora develops. So when that happens then we can re-address this. Bottom line is if you can get Bryant, Baez, Alcantara, Castro and Rizzo in the same line up you do so. If that means Alcantara in CF then so be it.

Lets face it Alcantara, Baez and Castro are all not D wizzes. So seeing how Castro is the SS you let the other pieces fall where they may.

My prediction is Alcantara plays CF for a few weeks and Bonifacio gets traded. Alcantara gets promoted. 2B/3B will be status que until the rosters expand. But who knows with Bryant at Iowa to protect Baez, Baez may explode. We will see there but as of now we can not expect Baez or Bryant on the team until S/T or the 172 day mark so they get a free year out of them.

So I'm expecting this to happen. They have Olt and Valbuena under control next year and Alcantara in CF and Lake in LF.

Now if Bryant and Baez just crush the league this year then I expect Theo to push the button and let them get their cup in sept and start out of S/T.

There comes a time where Theo will have to start proving that this sustained success is not a sustained joke.
