Cubs To Sign James McDonald

The Cubs have agreed to a minor league deal with pitcher James McDonald that includes an invitation to Spring Training, reports Bruce Levine of 670thescore.com (via Twitter). The 29-year-old hit the open market in September when he refused an outright assignment from the Pirates.

McDonald was off to an excellent start in 2012, but struggled mightily down the stretch. Things never came together for him last year, as he only got six starts and ended up with a 5.76 ERA in 29 2/3 MLB innings. Control was a particular issue, as McDonald ended up with 6.1 BB/9. In 33 Triple-A innings in 2013, McDonald scuffled to a 6.55 ERA.

Last year they turned Feldman into a potential long term bullpen piece and a iffy starter in Arrieta. I really don't see what the bitching is about. They needed more starters this year. They tried to get Tanaka and failed. So what are they supposed to do? Not sign another starter? You can make an argument they should have signed X, Y, or Z instead but it really doesn't matter because they are going to be a bad team regardless. And it's not like teams are falling over themselves to sign the remaining guys like Garza, Santana and Jiminez not to mention why would any of them want to sign with this cubs team in the first place?

I think Hammel will be regardless but I'd imagine McDonald is more depth in AAA in case of injuries. I'd imagine they would hope for Hendricks to take over in the event of a trade. Clearly he's unlikely to be as good as Shark in the event of a trade but he's a young guy they'd probably like to put innings on.

It could be more depth but I doubt it.

What I see is them not trusting Rusin or Grimm as the #5.

So that puts AAA as Rusin, Hendricks, Raley, Ramirez and Grimm.

In terms of trading Shark now:

Both starters added are proven in the league. Grimm and Rusin are under added depth and are not proven.

Mc was on the Pirates so he should know the div. already.

Over all it smells like a prep work deal getting ready to move shark.

If shark falls through then they can push either add into the pen for later use.

Okay... so even if the Cubs were 162-0 and they were up 3-0 in the World Series after sweeping NLDS and NLCS the Sox would still be better. Just don't agree with using that as logic.
