Right now the word isSpan or Heyward. Span comes with durability issues and the age that they start. Add to it they just picked up a lead off type in Ben to play 2B.

Now they ended up2nd place on Miller and it was Soler they were offering. So this chain of moves happen after the fall out.

My thought is they still may move Soler if the right deal is out there. But I see it as they may blow up budget and sign Heyward. Have him play CF. that way when Almora promotes he goes to RF, Soler to LF and Schwarber to Catch.

Pretty much what I'm seeing right now. It leaves Baez still as a sub but he is cheap still and still get plenty AB's late inning when Zorbrist goes to LF.

I mean Theo's been pretty transparent on what they are after. The one area they haven't attacked thus far is outfield defense. When the offseason came out the things he said fit Heyward to a T. The only question at the time was that Heyward really wasn't a lead off hitter and that's what they were losing in CF. That's no longer an issue with Zobrist into the fold.

Given all that, you have to think the cubs have always been planning on Heyward as their #1 target. It just makes so much sense and the fact they've gone out of their way to sign a lead off hitter rather than just ponying up for someone like Fowler or Span. For me I have to believe the plan is Heyward to CF and consider dealing Soler in the future if the right pitchers becomes available.

Assuming they do have the money to get Heyward, that makes the top of their line up much better. You can bat Zobrist #1, Heyward #2, Bryant #3, Rizzo #4, Schwarber #5 and Soler #6. That line up has the potential to be so scary especially when you consider Russell and Montero aren't exactly slouches either.

It was reported by Joel Sherman that the Cubs finished second for Miller, and Jorge Soler indeed was the headlining piece. Seeing what the Braves received, the Cubs would have probably have had to throw in Torres (speculating) in which the Cubs declined.

That said. Everyone knows my liking for Heyward since day one, and if Soler was indeed a package deal for a young controlled starter, it should still be the case.

The aforementioned line-up that Beck presented could still be equally as scary if the signed Heyward, and moved Baez to CF, and I would bet the defense is even better as Heyward assumes his natural position. I feel Baez would be great in CF.

Nothing wrong with Zobrist #1, Heyward #2, Bryant #3, Rizzo #4, Schwarber #5, Baez #6, Montero #7, pitcher #8, and Russell #9. :fap:

The top 5 are great OBP guys which the Cubs lacked, and the strikeouts would have been decreased greatly by the new additions, plus the maturation process of the rookies.

Oh! Did I mention that the Cubs would have a young arm in the rotation by trading Soler? :fap: :fap::fap: :fap:

We still need to get Heyward before we can fap. I'm thinking some other teams may drive the price up, hope not though.

Many thought Castro was worth at least one if not two tor types. I was the only one who nailed his value.

I agree with everything you wrote

What? No one thought that after last season. That was thought the season before. Keep it in context.

In fairness, I thought we could package Castro with a top pitching prospect for a young TOR. But I never thought 2 TOR's for Castro, that's insane. Not sure where Brett is pulling that from.

LOL at this thread. What's up Cubs fans??? The Cubs have closed the WS window? The Cubs are now an old team??? The Cubs have taken a step backwards??? LooooooL! What's wrong with some of you guys?

The smarter fans knew that Castro was going to be eventually traded. He was a good player, but not great. I loved how he responded to losing his job last year, and I especially thought his defense was great, which was always my biggest thing with him.

We replaced him, however, with a WS experienced 2B player with a 4 year contract... the same team control we had on Castro. Ben can leadoff for the Cubs, he's a very intelligent player, he hit's for a decent average, and he brings a veteran OBP to the young Cubs lineup. What's not to like???

The Cubs also got a Veteran starter for the #3 spot in the rotation in Lackey. He was always hard on the Cubs. He's friends with Lester which looks like it's good for the team chemistry, he's got a lot of decent post season veteran experience, he's brings some toughness to a young Cubs team, and it's only a two year deal, the same team control we have with Jake. We do lose a draft pick, but we'll most likely get a better one back for Fowler. What's not to like???

The Cubs have quietly added some decent relief pitching to the staff, and with Warren, we get a decent swing guy that can start. Again, what's not to like???

Oh yeah, the Cubs are NOT done yet!!! They are looking to address the CF spot as well. What if we landed Heyward? Holy shit, another veteran starter with OBP, speed, and defense, that can hit high in the order???? Stay tuned.

The Cubs have only lost Castro and Fowler from the team that won 97 games last year. They still have all the talent they drafted, and they still have another wave of talent coming up. Again, what's not to like???

They have done all this all while being frugal as well. They are being smart! Maddon also LOVES Zobrist and Lackey. Don't under estimate this. Remember how important Maddon was last year folks?

Oh yeah, did I mention that they are not done yet???

I don't like this deal on the surface. Especially after that second half he had.

Time will tell.

I think people are over looking how some good veteran leadership could help a young Cubs team. That alone, imo, makes the Cubs a better team. I just don't understand this blind love for Castro, myself. You'd think we just traded Lou Brock right now. It's also clear that Zobrist is a Maddon/Theo guy. It's that way for a reason.

This thread is pure gold.

Starlin Castro on pace to finish his third season out of the last four with a fWAR under 2.0.

Damn I wish we had Starlin Jeter's sub .300 OBP right about now. So much better than Zobust!

Better than Warren

Not sure what Warren has to do with Castro being a failed MLB starter who somehow cultivated a bizarre throng of irrational defenders.

This must be an awkward and uncomfortable time for them.
