I would like to hope that he offers something of value other than potential

The next question is, if he's such an offensive wunderkind why hasn't he interviewed with other teams? The Bears aren't the only team with an open offensive coordinator position. But they were the only team to interview this guy. If a guy is so brilliant you'd think other teams would at least be interviewing him.

IMO, that's easy to figure out.

I don't think that there is any indication that Doyle is ready to be an OC on his own so to speak. So, the ones interested in him would be the offensive minded HC's. And the Saints have not even hired their HC yet.

A) I don't see where either Schottenheimer or Coen have any connection to him

B) Both those guys were just hired and I don't remember really seeing anywhere where they have even started to interview for their OC's. I could be wrong on that but I have only seen stuff about the DC for Dallas and nothing at all for the Jags

Candidate interviews with other teams, signs with the Bears: “ why are we hiring a guy that other teams passed on?“

Candidate does not interview with other teams, signs with the Bears: “ shouldn’t we be hiring a guy that other teams interviewed?“

This right here explains him perfectly. Complain, whine, cry about everything and then say he was the only one who saw it coming.
While the rest of us are confused by the hire realize we don’t know shit, can’t change shit, and don’t have a clue what BJ sees in this kid.

No established VG OC would take this job and operate somebody else's O. Maybe somebody that's washed out might but meh. Other teams are in a different position and will hire a known play caller. The way this is done, is by hiring young potential and hopefully turn them into the next wunderkind like Johnson (though he mostly did it on his own). Nice thing is that if this works out, he can't be hired away as an OC and would need to become a HC which would take being more established (so we have more years of stability).

He reportedly has the smarts and temperament to pull this off. We'll see if true soon enough. Would be cool if he becomes the 1st branch to fall off the Johnson tree.

Ignoring fat tards meltdown it’s pretty clear with this hire that Ben Johnson going to be balls deep into the offense calling plays and not just a hc. He won’t be a hands free coach. Which stresses how good of a hire Allen was for dc. Andy Reid pretty much operates like this(Naggy might call more stuff now but when he was hired he called a couple games)

Ummm teams fired just their offensive coordinators this off season. It doesn't have to be just the open head coaching positions that need OCs. Thanks for that though.

Name me your possible OC‘s. No affront, I just don’t know names.

You wanted them to hire an experienced offensive coordinator who would come in and not call his own plays, but rather allow the head coach to do all of that. In other words, you wanted fucking Matt Nagy.
So on the one side we have you who believes the Bears can do no wrong and endlessly attacks me for it because you offer no separate analysis of your own. Thanks for that fun.

I don’t believe the Bears can do no wrong. Obviously you didn’t read my very long post in saying I’m not assuming the guy is great or that it is Ben Johnson’s first choice. We didn’t get the guy from Detroit, who was the first one that Johnson interviewed and he was rumored to have been talking to David Shaw so it’s possible Shaw was his second choice and turned him down.

I don’t assume that everyone they hire is great. I don’t know anything significant about the new OC. And I said that.

But you’re doing this reverse Groucho take of “if he comes to the bears, he can’t be worth having“ and that’s just childish and fucking stupid.

And it’s just so fucking tiring that you do it in every thread on every topic every season every day.

Go back under your bridge.

It's actually worse than that. Nagy would never have moved from KC fo an OC gig nor would KC have allow it. What top OC is going to effectively be in the shadows as an asst OC? You hire the guy you think is smart and has the right temperament to groom for the position.

BJ = OC

DD = Assistant OC

This isn’t hard.

Randel El probably wouldn’t be allowed here without the “promotion” to assistant head coach.

DD probably needed a promotion to be hired as well. But anyone who thinks he’s going to be a full responsibility OC is not thinking this through

Maybe we are underestimating the importance of this hire but at least have a good reason since Ben Johnson is an offensive head coach that is calling the plays. You’re definitely overestimating things and having a meltdown over it and not even giving one legit reason for it other than you’re in a GREAT MOOD!

Then the next question is if Rams fans were worried when McVay decided to hand over the OC spot to someone like LaFluer... who I'm sure was interviewing all around the NFL for an OC spot at the time.

People want to complain way too much. Ben Johnson has been very calculated in this whole thing. I'm sure he grilled this guy enough in the interview to make sure it was a good move. And the list of people they interviewed were a bunch of nobodies to begin with, except Shaw. We should've already been ready for a name we didn't know.
