Derrek Lee will come cheap, 3-4 million on a 1-year contract.

If they want butts in the seats, sign Fielder. Chicks dig the long ball.

In that situation, LaHair. But I really really doubt that situation will occur. If it does, I see Theo getting someone else.

probably trade for vmart or howard

or maybe trading garza to the tigers can get you miggy and 3 specs.

I feel like if they wanted to sign Fielder, they would have been in a contend-now mode and would have done it sooner along with trying to add CJ Wilson, Edwin Jackson etc. instead of waiting for Fielder's market to collapse while the other guys got snatched up.

I think any team that wants Fielder will be content to just keep waiting.

I like the Derrek Lee idea. He'll be cheap and bring a fan favorite back, if only for a season.

do we really need to sign lee if we're aiming towards rebuilding though?

i suppose it could be an option if all other options for 1B are gone...

but you saying he'd get a 1 year contract is case in point...he's 36 and he wouldnt be on the team very long...

i am not the biggest fan of lahair though....you can argue that putting a lahair at 1B is aiming towards rebuilding..but he's 29 and not proven at all in the majors..he's been in AAA for a couple of years atleast

i think the cubs should trade garza and byrd in a three way trade...padres would get garza..toronto gets san diego prospects and byrd....and cubs would get rizzo along with toronto prospects(opens up outfield spot for brett jackson...byrd would fit well in toronto outfield imo..they could move rasmus to left field)

LaHair isn't your long term solution. He's just kind of there to stand at 1B until the Cubs are set to contend.

but how long will this be? i guess this more or less depends on free agency this year..whether or not we get fielder or edwin jackson or rizzo or exactly what theo's plan is(which no one really knows...we know there's some indication of rebuilding..but perhaps there are things going on under wraps)

if we go for lahair at 1B and we're doing a larger scale rebuilding...this team wont contend for 1-2 years at least...do we really want lahair to stand in at that time?

he's already peaked and he's not an MLB starter...

idk..i think there's a difference between having a 21-24 year old who's young and has similar game and stats to lahair...and lahair who's 29..peaked...and not potent to really do anything

we need to find a 1B imo....but in the end lahair will probably be our 1B for 2012....aint gonna be pretty

I don't really have the answers for you. I just don't see the Cubs overpaying for a free agent 1B during a rebuild. Or any free agent for that matter. That's why LaHair is the obvious stopgap. If they can convince Derrek Lee to stand there for $4MM or so, great, but I doubt they do that either...

Nothing's impossible, they might still decide to splurge on Prince Fielder, but in a rebuild situation I don't think letting Bryan LaHair stand in is unreasonable.

Yes I do think that.

Nationals Emerge As Favorite For Fielder?: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Updated.

5:11pm: The Nationals’ local TV revenue is about to “double, triple or more,” a source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Owner Ted Lerner is already the wealthiest in MLB, according to Forbes. One of Rosenthal’s sources expects the Nationals to sign Fielder, though the first baseman will want a full no-trade clause. LaRoche’s presence on the roster wouldn't stop the team from making a move, Rosenthal writes.

So LaRoche would become their super-priced pinch hitter :D

Go for it, Washington.

Has the Gabby Sanchez talk disappeared?

I would love to add a high upside young power hitting 1st baseman and as much as I love Prince Fielder I want him on Cubs terms not on Boras terms.

That contract and the Jason Werth contract could kill the Nationals.

Their owner is one of the richest in baseball. I saw that today and was surpirse. The money wouldn't, but if they wanted to trade them in the future, then yeah.
