dabynsky is correct, by pre-Hendry I meant before he was GM. The pre-Hendry decisions had to be run past McPhail though, right?

Eh I suppose, but really it was Ed Lynch running the show until he was fired. MacPhail promoted Hendry to assistant GM right away, and by most accounts was heavily involved in all decisions at the time. The read I was always got was that MacPhail's interest by the time the late 90s ended that his interest had more drifted to being the commissioner of baseball, and so the level of involvement he had in negotiations and such was pretty limited. Have no sources to really back it up but that seemed to be the whispers at the time.

I dig what you be saying.

The MLBTR article was updated as apparently Fielder and Boras were in DC, but did not meet with the Orioles.

I understand the point they are making, but I find it hard to believe that a shorter than Soriano deal would work out worse for the Cubs when comparing signing a 27 year old whose value is solely derived from his bat compared to a 30 year old whose value was at a minimum inflated by what his legs had produced previously.

I agree they are not even in the same league.

One was a 33 year old getting an 8 year deal with declining health.

The other is a 28 year old who would get a 5-6 year deal who has never missed significant time.

Fielder “wanted the Cubs” because he has superb career numbers at Wrigley Field, and the two Chicago airports provide easy access (i.e. direct flights) to his Florida home. But, as we’ve addressed already on this blog, the Northsiders are in full rebuilding mode under new president Theo Epstein.
Updating the Prince Fielder market: Cubs, Nats, Jays | HardballTalk

If he wants to be a Cub I am sure that Theo would sign him to a 4-5 year deal that will be reasonable. I doubt that if Prince gives them a discount they are going to say NO.

However, if Prince wants to be a Cub he needs to meet Theo in the middle and give something to the Cubs.

LMAO at you thinking Boras and Fielder would give the Cubs a discount. He is going to get 7 years, 170+ million from some time. Boras is waiting for a team to get desperate.

Brewers offered 5 years, 120 million and Boras told them the lowest they would go would be 7/180. This was last season, so maybe the price changed.

But it's funny that you think Boras and Fielder would give the Cubs a discount when they really didn't give a discout to a team he has been with for 6+ seasons, a team that was 2 wins away from a WS, and a city that just loves him.

So, why would he give a discount to the Cubs?

1. It is Milwaukee and lets not forget that.

2. I said if the article is true and he wants to go to the Cubs then he will have to give a little. Lets role play it for a 2nd,

Prince "I really want to play in Chicago"

Theo "We will not sign you for 7 years 180 million"

Prince "But I really like Dale Sveum, playing in Wrigley and it is not Milwaukee"

Theo "Prince if you want to be here it will be for 5 years 125 million take it or leave it"

Prince "I will think about it"

3. It is not Milwaukee.

Chicago is not Milwaukee because Milwaukee is (unfortunately) still closer to a contending team than Chicago is whether or not Prince is on the team. The Brewers fan's logic has merit. I think it's best for the teams to wait until Fielder and Boras become desperate and not the other way around, though.

If Texas can't lock up Yu Darvish, they might sign Fielder.

If the Nationals decide that Adam LaRoche can play LF, they might sign Fielder.

Both teams will probably wait. Boras might be insane with the salary demands but he's not completely stupid. They'll bring down their demands to get Fielder signed before position players report.

The Cubs are probably lower on the list in my opinion.

LOL. All I have to say to that. 96 wins last year, how did the Cubs do? Prince wants to win, and get paid. Cubs might pay him, but they wont contend with him.

Like I said before, I cant wait until he signs somewhere so I dont have to read all of the we todd did posts about fielder taking pay cuts to play with the cubs, and how the "theo administration" is going to get boras etc etc etc.

if he is going to take any paycut it would be in milwaukee. Winning there, losing here.

The flip side is, does Milwaukee still have the money to match whatever offer the Cubs or whoever else would be comfortable giving to Fielder?

He wants to do commercials and sell products.

He wants a Nike swoosh attached to him and that won't happen wearing a Brewer uniform.

If he wanted to win he would sign with Texas.

That and it is Milwaukee.

You don't have to wait until Fielder signs. You can just not read this forum.

True, but CO makes us dumber so that's not a positive.

I think the Jays will sign him, def if they can trade for Garzaq (I still think the Tigers are the favorite, though.)

They traded for Frasor to up their 'pen.

There's 2 WC teams and if they do acquire Garza/sign Fielder, there's a good chance they will get the final spot.

Angels/Rangers or Jays.

this is a legitimate question

While it's fun to dump on Captain Obvious, I'd like to see an answer to that question

Of course, the answer is probably quite obvious too.
