Why would the NHL tell Keith its a phone hearing, and then offer an in-person hearing with the potential for a longer suspension?

Makes no sense.
The in person meeting just signifies that the situation is more serious. Shit just got real.

Keith, you're in trouble but its not too major.

Oh wait, the guy's brother said you were talking shit before you hit him. You better come see us in person because you're in bigger trouble now.

I get how the inperson means the hit was more violent and worse.

My beef is why does the NHL first tell Keith its a phone hearing, then tell him its a in-person hearing, but he can skip the inperson hearing.

Just have him come in person.

Or be like the other big 3 sports leagues, lay down the punishment with a chance for appeal.

A player can always skip the in person meeting. It is their right and they do it regularly when in this situation.

We don't know for sure what the NHL told him, just what sources had to say. So who really knows.

It was a phone hearing first, no?

It wouldn't make sense for a player to show up for the in person hearing, when they were first told that it was a phone hearing.

How Many Games For Keith?***Sedin With Concussion?***

Someone or Danielle's medical report must have changed shanahan's mind into a 6+ suspension.

That's the only thing I can think would cause this reversal, so to speak.

Actually, Mike Gillis called in a favor. He asked for Keith to be suspended for the rest of the regular season.

His reasoning is simple. With Keith out, the Hawks will tank and wind up with the 7th seed and a first round matchip with... Vancouver.

Vancouver will wim the series in game 7 on home and Gillis will FINALLY be able to use all the expensive confetti that he bought in preparation of the stanley cup victory last year.

Its brilliant.

I just saw he also tweeted that NHL fine money goes to the Player Emergency Fund to help retired players.

That's great to hear, but it makes me think about the NFL. Unless things have changed I'm pretty sure all NFL fines go to charities which is understandable, but one would think they'd be putting a lot more care into their retires now especially with lawsuits.

Which, I'm sure is something that the union would like to know as well, which would only be about consistency of message from the management side of things, as well as the potential precedent that was outlined.

RT @ChrisKuc: #Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith suspended five games for hit on Canucks' Daniel Sedin.

I don't get it.

If Shanahan had decided to come down harder on Duncs for the retaliation, five makes sense.

But since the video posted by Shanahan didn't use that as a reference, I have no idea how Keith gets 5 when Shane Doan only got 3.

Here we go again, zero fucking consistency.

Uh it was deserved.

No it wasn't...not 5 games IMO

I've been back and forth on this, but like Dmelt said, if Doan only gets 3 as a repeat offender, how does Shanahan justify Keith getting 5?

I think the 5 games shows that there was a little something behind the scene like politics. The NHL disciplinary always has been and will be inconsistent.

I'm good with five games. That play has absolutely no place in the NHL. There were so many things wrong with that elbow.

Only way it should be 5 games is if the rumors of him 'threatening' Daniel are true...supposedly the refs backed up that story, but only gave Keith a 2 min penalty? LOL ok...

nobody is saying it was a good play, but 5 games with no history is ok for you?
