It would have been exciting to get Bell no doubt. Really though, I am not sure it was the way to go.
If we had signed Bell, we still lose Callahan and Bush and are not able to get reliable contributors in the secondary like Buster. Sure, you can draft them, but our first pick is in the 3rd round and it's unlikely you find a guy into that type of starter role in the secondary. It's actually more likely you find a RB in the middle rounds to start. It's why it's hard for me to justify paying a RB like Bell that much per year. And as great as he has been, he was a work horse in Pitt. RBs tend to wear out a lot earlier than other positions and guys like Gore are not common at all.
You are seeing the effects of trading for Mack. You had to give up 2 first round picks and then pay him. So you have less to work with in free agency and less chances to get an immediate starter in the draft. Now Mack obviously worked out well for us so far. You can't have you cake and eat it too.
