It seems like the GOT people picked Arya to kill the Night King and not George RR Martin.
"While the show creators were mum on Arya’s mystical lineage, they knew for a total of three years that she would be the one to end the long night. “We hoped to kind of avoid the expected, and Jon Snow has always been the hero, the one who’s been the savior,” co-showrunner David Benioff explained in the post-show extras. “But it just didn’t seem right to us for this moment.” "
So either Martin said Snow was the one who kills the Night King and the creators of the show just wanted to do something different, or Martin said he doesn't know yet and the show creators just decided it would be Arya.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the book.
The Night King in the show doesn't actually appear in the books. This version of the Night King was entirely created by the showrunners and so it makes sense that Martin had nothing to do with who kills him.
In hindsight, it explains why the NK was dispatched now and not later as Martin never intended for the NK to feature prominently in his story as the conflict was always about the Iron Throne. That is also probably why the mystery and lore behind the NK is so undeveloped as the showrunners don't quite have Martin's creativity so they ended up not knowing what to do with the NK.
I thought the same thing.
Maybe his purpose was to bring everyone together for the kill to even happen? But then, if he fulfilled his purpose, why is he still alive?
Again the NK is not in the books as imagined here so Jon Snow's purpose is not tied to the NK but to his identity as Aegon most likely. In the end, you could almost treat the whole NK story as filler the showrunners created to fill up airtime.
