ESPN.com's Bruce Levine reported: The Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays remain the front-runners for a trade with Chicago, according to industry sources. The Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians and San Francisco Giants have also expressed strong interest in the pitcher. Texas and Toronto were the main suitors for Garza in July 2012 before he injured his elbow and missed the rest of the season. The two clubs have had numerous evaluators watching Garza over his past three starts. Texas has had four scouts watching overall. When that type of evaluation is involved, general managers are carefully looking at the reports as a final part of the process. The Cubs will be looking for pitching and run-producer prospects in return for Garza. The Rangers' Mike Olt would most likely be a part of any deal if Chicago and Texas agree on a trade. The 25-year-old Olt is a power hitting third baseman and outfielder.
Garza Informed He'll Likely Be Traded
By Edward Creech [July 14 at 3:30pm CST]
The Cubs have informed Matt Garza he will likely be traded after contract talks failed to produce an extenstion, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The Rangers and Indians, according to Heyman, are clearly interested in Garza while the Red Sox are waiting upon some clarity on the return of injured starter Clay Buchholz. The Cardinals, meanwhile, are believed to be a stealth player for the fifth-ranked free agent on MLBTR's 2014 Free Agent Power Rankings. Yesterday, we learned the Blue Jays are "front runners" in the Garza trade derby, but Heyman writes there is little to no evidence, at the moment, they are actively involved.
Heyman reports the hangup in the negotiations between Garza and the Cubs is over the average annual value of the deal. Just last night, Garza still pegged the odds of returning to Chicago as 50/50.
