Bowden on ESPN

• The biggest name out there right now is Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza, and I'm told there is an 80 percent chance he is traded before his next start, which is scheduled to come next Monday or Tuesday in Arizona.

The Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox are all interested, while the Diamondbacks are a real dark horse in this race, especially if they are willing to part with left-handed starter David Holmberg. The 21-year-old isn't overpowering, but he has a 2.97 ERA in 19 starts for Double-A Mobile this year

Blue Jays might not be out of the running either with an aggressive GM and the news that Josh Johnson is not being traded.

Saw it, anybody got the full article?

Hopefully Bowden didnt go full Special person and suggest lopsided trade ideas for Garza that included broken arms

Play the field, see what you get. If it's nothing desirable--Give the man 5 years....

they have 2 weeks to trade him.. i think the closer they get to the deadline, the less their going to get in return out of desperation to get something before losing him for just a draft pick.. OR their going to have to give him what he wants in an extension, to avoid getting nothing but a draft pick in return.

Here is a little perspective from the Rangers side of getting Matt Garza: http://www.lonestarball.com/2013/7/16/4529200/some-thoughts-on-matt-garza. Cliff notes version he is not a fan of giving up anything for him and would rather another team pick him up.

Just read this, and wow--very one sided article. This author only went into every stat (ERA since 2007 didnt help his cause to me, and sorry--Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) as the other stat is grasping at straws) that helps his opinion--that Matt Garza is 'just another pitcher.' This is a big reason I'm not a sabermetrics freak.

That's why he's not in the Rangers front office. This happens every year--non-contenders with damn good players command good returns, usually prospects as it is the small market teams getting pick-pocketed, and theres always some jackass reporter who says "no, dont ship the future for a chance at the playoffs/world series."

Last year King Felix prior to his huge deal was the talk of the town. I'm sure if I dipped into sabermetrics hard enough I could find one stat that says Hernandez is also "just another pitcher." Big reason why sabermetrics isnt the end-all-be-all indicator of a good player.

The article is shit from a mind who falls under the old saying "the eye sees what it wants to see." This guy doesnt like Matt Garza and hopes his team does not acquire him based on his ERA not being desirable enough and 'fielding independent pitching.'

Olt is dropping down the rankings fast. Don't let the rankings before the season full you. A lot of people are down on him this year so he wouldn't be a great haul. The truth is he has vision problems, strikeout problems, and is about to be 25. Im not saying he couldn't turn it around, but he is a big risk at this point.

The cubs wont get Skaggs or Bradley. DBacks wont give it up for Garza. They'll probably offer 1 for Shark. Not worth it. I like Dave Holmberg--but not enough to replace Matt Garza.

Update from Cubs Den on the situation:
Hearing now that part of the delay here is that the Cubs are waiting on 4-5 teams to make their best offer before making decision. Blue Jays among those teams. Not unusual in that buying teams will often request that the selling teams check back with them before pulling the trigger. It appears the Cubs may be in the process of sorting that out.

Personally I am not sold on teams offering what the FO is holding out for before Garza's next start, but I could be wrong.

It makes absolutely no sense to me that Toronto would want to involve themselves in a bidding war after they shit the bed in that RA Dickey trade.

Their GM thinks outside of the box and is super aggressive, if you can't tell I am a fan. I could see him making this move, but the question is do they give up what the Cubs are asking for which would probably mean Aaron Sanchez. Kyle Drabek is interesting to me, but he wouldn't be that of centerpiece that the front office is gunning for at this point.

USA Today's Ted Berg throwing out a Garza to Pittsburgh possibility --

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/07/matt-garza-to-the-pirates-and-other-mlb-trades-that-should-happen/

All signs point to Garza getting dealt at the trade deadline: The Cubs aren’t contending and he’s a solid mid-rotation starter with postseason experience. Chicago is said to be looking for a haul similar to the one the Brewers got for Zack Greinke last year, which was headlined by 2013 All-Star Jean Segura and two starting pitching prospects.

It’s impossible to know how teams value their competitors’ prospects, and Polanco is probably a bit better regarded nationally than Segura was at this point last season. But the Pirates have young outfielders performing at the Major League level and the Cubs don’t have a ton in the way of outfield prospects above A-ball.

Polanco, who’s playing well in Double-A, may seem too steep a price for the Pirates to pay for a pitcher of Garza’s caliber. But the Pirates appear to have their best shot at the playoffs in years, and much of their first-half success was based on starting pitching performances that seem unsustainable. Wandy Rodriguez should return to their rotation soon, but adding Garza would fortify the staff and give them more flexibility to limit rookie Gerrit Cole’s innings later in the season.

The Pirates are believed to be looking for help in right field and rumors have swirled around Cubs’ right-fielder Nate Schierholtz, so maybe there’s room for an inter-division trade to expand.

I have no idea why the Cubs would be looking at another top-flight outfield prospect, but I certainly understand the attraction from Pittburgh's standpoint. Including Schierholtz also makes sense for a club wanting to add some cheap help in one of the corner outfield spots. I'd love for the Cubs to get their hands on Jameson Taillon, but that seems highly unlikely unless the Pirates were 100% sure they could keep Garza. If they were somehow able to wrangler free Tyler Glasnow and Kyle McPhearson, that could also be attractive to the Cubs.

From the same blog post at Cubs Den:
Some good stuff from the Red Sox blog "Over the Monster". The Red Sox may be waiting to see what happens with Clay Buchholz throwing session, which has been pushed back to Thursday. OtM also speculates that with the Red Sox facing a lot of 40 man roster decisions, they could offer a package centered around Anthony Ranaudo, who was a significant overslot signing from the Theo Epstein era. Ranaudo is 8-2 with a 2.67 ERA in AA with 9.30 Ks/9 IP and 3.16 walks/9 IP. His FIP is a solid 3.15.
This could be a huge get for the front office if they could get Ranaudo and a couple other interesting guys.

The OF prospect thing is not that big of deal. As I've said before in this thread the point is to acculumate as many bats. If you can hit they will find a spot for you on the diamond. I still have my doubts that the Cubs are anxious to deal players that they have control over for next season and beyond. I am not saying that they will hold onto to them, but I think the value needed back is going to be significantly higher because that control is important.

if this is true, then it should be nothing but good on the returns for the cubs.. if each team has to up their offer in order to stay in the bid for garza as hoyer tells them he got a better offer from other teams.

I'd pass on Drabek as a centerpiece -- the Tommy John surgery is a huge question mark and the fact that he hasn't looked elite since 2010 scares me. Sanchez could be a nice get -- he's looked nice in high-A this year, I've seen a few vids on YouTube. Anthony Gose would be a nice get from Toronto -- great speed, decent arm, but he hasn't been able to tone down the strikeouts yet.

If the BoSox were really offering Ranaudo I think they would move to the top of the list for the front office. The familarity with prospect combined with the big time near ready pitching prospect would be hard to turn down.

I've got a half-chub just thinking about the Cubs being able to land Ranaudo. Two of my friends I went to college with -- Jeremy Hazelbaker and Kolbrin Vitek, are both in the Red Sox farm system and have played with Ranaudo. Jeremy, in particular, is really, really high on him.

I think Drabek's stuff is what interests me and the ability to buy low on him is why I stated he isn't a centerpiece. I see him as a piece similar to Arrieta to be honest. But the fact that TO is trying to gather pieces for now might be why they would be willing to throw him in.

Getting one of those guys (Sanchez or Gose) as a center piece with two other lower level prospects would be a solid get. All indications are the Cubs are using the Greinke deal last year as a model for what they want. I am just not sold yet that other teams are willing to meet that price given all the chatter about the (unreasonably in their mind) high price.
