So I guess the next logical movement of this discussion is how did you guys learn to play guitar?

I would consider myself right at an intermediate player, as I started seriously playing when I was 19 (6 years ago) by looking up taps online for some of my favorite songs. I ended up learning a lot of just basic chords and power chords, but picked up on some riffs and plucking parts as well (Thanks Alkaline Trio). I went from beginner to intermediate when I joined an existing band as their rhythm guitarist. I pretty much knew all their songs as I've been buddies with them since I was 17, and they wanted to expand the sound of the music. Essentially I was shown what to play and just went from there even adding my own twists to certain parents. Now, I switch between rhythm and lead on different songs as the time has gone on and I've learned more and practiced more.

one of my favorite guitars ever, "knight's silver" finish and then a knockoff with a "brushed metal" finish:

One of my best friends is big into synths (went to school for music design). My opinion? I think their lame but to each their own.

Yeah synthesizers are lame. everyone should stop listening to any "music" that has synths in it. :oprah:

My brother taught me basics then i learned from tabs. I used to come home every day sophomore year of high school and play First Date by Blink 182 for about 2 hours straight. Very fun to jam out to.

I guess lame was harsh. I'd much rather play an instrument such as a guitar than electronically manipulate sound on a keyboard.

(not that I don't like that song, but seriously I hope you aren't ever in charge of telling musicians what "correct" is.)

Post your guitar shit in here!

I have a 2005 V..Its my main axe..I love it, and the mini's r great..Maybe the vintage pups are nicer, but this guitar rocks. I play strictly blues, and love it!

There is a pretty cool eclectic shop down here but they for some reason don't post their entire inventory online. They have a shit load of amps, guitars, basses and off the wall stuff (stars wars figures, kiss stuff and other collectibles). He's always getting in older gear and posting it on his facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/robotmonster.guitars?fref=ts

I started taking lessons in the 6th grade at a local mom and pop music school, The Bridgeport Conservatory of Music..I didn't know at the time, but there were some people going there that would become elite in the music business..

1..Pete Cetera..Chicago
2..Marty Grebb..Buckinghams. Bonnie Raitt
3..Kal David..Illinois Speed Press, and backed up a ton other famous people (Etta James..Johnny Rivers..Eric Burdon etc)
4..Bob Lizik.. Brian Wilson Band

We have remained friends through the years, although Cetera doesnt care to associate with the old crew

Cetera, Grebb, and Kal had a band knows as the Exceptions. The most popular lounge band in Chicago

Grebb's father owned the place and I started learning from him. He taught just about any instrument..Then I graduated to Grebb's brother Bob who wrote all the music books and charts for Howie Roberts.

Eventually I left there and after coming back from the military I took some classes at the American Conservatory of Music downtown Chicago..I also took some classes at the Chicago Conservatory as well. There I met guys like Tyrone Davis and Garland Green. Through them I met many other notables and recording artists.

When in HS, I was playing lounges at night. One in particular was the Club Laurel on N Broadway. I also played in Old Town a lot during it's heyday. In those days, the club would hire you for a specified number of weeks, so all your equipment stayed at the club..I would leave the clubs at 2-5 AM depending, and get to school by 8 AM.

I am still playing out when possible today

I started playing 23 years ago. I've always played lead guitar in different bands I caught on to it pretty quick. I was self taught until around 6 months into it and then started taking lessons from a respected player in my area. I learned from him for about a year and then took some music theory in college.

Unfortunately I've pretty much stopped playing except for a few hours per week. That's a whole different story. I love music though and hope to get back to it relatively soon.
