Just once. The Bob's were brought in and wiped out my "extraneous" position. Fortunately, I was young, single and didn't have much more than a car payment and rent hanging over my head. Not that any of that really mattered, because the short-sighted assholes called me back a week later. I'll always hate to admit that I did go back, but it only lasted for two bitter months.

Lessons for you youngsters out there:
Don't ever assume your job is safe.
Never stop looking for better opportunities.
Any company that needs to spend money trying to figure out why & where they're losing money is a bad company to work for.

Never been fired. But once my boss left and went to another company and offered me a management position there. I felt like I should take it but subconsciously I knew it was a bad move and deep down I didn't want the job. So when I went in for the interview that was just a formality I had a really bad attitude, demanded more money from the HR lady, was sort of smarmy when I met the people who would be under me. When I called her she said she was sorry but I made such a bad impression she had to withdraw the offer. I felt horrible at first because I knew I had acted like a jerk. But soon I was ok with it because that job would have sucked ass and I wound up with a much better one. I wish I'd had enough insight to just politely decline her offer instead of making an ass of myself. But I was still pretty green in the industry and wasn't super clear yet on which way to go.
