Well believe what you will but Russell has basically been this sort of hitter all year and they benched Castro to move him to SS. I just think they value his defense as much as his bat. I'm not going to get dragged into a Baez debate here because clearly you're opinion on him is vastly different to mine. But suffice to say if they were worried that much about Russell's hitting they would have called Baez up pre-injury or sooner once he returned from it.

This is what I love about this board. Not much name calling and agreeing to disagree. Why can't the Bears sub be like this?

Russell has had his share of good hitting games, including a couple multi homer games. The bottom line is Russell's defense is most important in a playoff race. No playoff team will have a error prone SS starting.

*** Cue nice defensive play, and the double play set up by Russell.

Not me... I was against bringing him back when they did

I was indifferent on it, but his hot start sure as **** made me think he was reliable. He has been horrid in the second half of the season

I know why they like Ross, but I'm wondering if his age is catching up to him. His blocking skills aren't as good as they were earlier in the year, IMHO.

You guys realize he's been worth 2.1 fWAR this year for $9 mil right? Going rate per win is typically $7 mil or so the past few years. He's frankly still a major bargain. Also, consider what the #4/5 would have looked like without him. The #5 starter had largely been a disaster so unless you were getting something else amazing I doubt you'd find a better way to spend the money.

Atta boy Jon! Big double play by the Cubs and K by Lester. I'd Love to see the Cubs manufacture a run here in the 8th!

In ref to my previous comment about Hammel, what I should probably say is the problem isn't Hammel. He's been fine for what he is. The problem is they don't have a #5 starter and they really should have a better guy in front of Hammel. For example something like Arrieta, Lester, <new guy> Hammel, Hendricks. That would be a decent rotation.

I really want two more starters so Hammel, Hendricks, Wada, etc. compete for number 5.

Hoping to see some improvement in Hendricks...enough to bounce Hammel to 5th.

I definitely agree. There's a few games where the cubs just didn't score any runs for Lester, and a few more where the bullpen blew nice games for him. Lester could easily have at least 5 more wins, imo. I like how he's never complained, however. I just meant we need him to step up, be a veteran, and get us a win against the Bucs tonight.

Yes sir. Ask and ye shall receive.
