Fowler telling the league they should have paid him.

It's actually crazy how value that contract is for the cubs right now. He was the first guy to 1 fWAR which is only slightly below what they gave him in terms of value since 1 fWAR is like $7-8 mil generally.

Against a pitcher who had good control tonight, Russell saw 17 pitches in just 3 AB's.

The kid has a good eye and will only get better at the plate. He may be at .244, but he seems to have good AB's, doesn't get himself out too often, especially for such a young guy, and will hit for more power this year. He is a real asset.

His sac fly was awesome. Well ok, a homer would have been awesome, but he produced when needed! Props!

Addison Russell is very quietly improving almost daily. Defensively he's close to the best in the game and at the plate his OBP is way up. His BA has gone up .040 in just a few games. This kid is one to watch. Anyone questioning that trade now?

I don't believe anyone ever questioned that trade or had issues with Russell. His BA last year was below where I expected, but I don't recall much ever said here that was negative. I think you can just see with the kid how smooth and how mature he is, and his D plays, regardless of his BA.

As with some good defensive SS before him, you think that any offense you get is a plus. But he will be a good offensive player, not just a "good enough" offensive player.

I don't think I was around here when the trade happened so I don't know what people's reactions to it were but other sites I frequent there were plenty that questioned it. One of my oldest friends called me a naive idiot for thinking it was a good trade. He was on board with the Sun Times' anti-Cubs agenda, until he suddenly wasn't. All sorts of people thought the Cubs should have gotten more for Samardzija but personally I was stunned that they were able to get a prospect of Russell's caliber in that deal. He's going to be fun to watch for a long time. Within a couple of years he's going to settle in at about .280/.350/.400 with 20 HR/year while keeping his K% to about 19-20 and his BB% over 10. I think you're looking at a 5 fWAR player year after year. Plus he's an easy player to root for.

No poster of significance here didn't like the trade. Most of the discussion revolved around Beane going for WS or bust at that point.

The league is going to adjust back to him. Lets see what he does. Im not sold he is a .280 hitter, but he is giving better at bats this year. His D is pretty stellar, but he has some stiff competition. Correa may be a generational talent. Lindor is special with the glove. Seager has a ton of hype. SS was pretty weak the last couple of years, but its getting real deep in the league. I wasn't thrilled when the trade originally happened. I was more ok with it a couple of days after the trade. It was adding another SS that threw me off. I liked McKinney. Also, people sometimes have revisionist history. Russell wasn't considered a lock as a major league SS because they thought he may fill out his frame more and lose a step. He never did and he is a terrific defensive SS. When him and Baez are on the field, the range is insane up the middle. He should walk more this year batting in front of the pitcher. We don't need him to figure it out with the bat. We need him to get timely hits and give good at bats before the pitcher. Anything else is just gravy.

Mechanically-speaking, Russell is rock solid. I would be surprised if he didn't eventually hit around .280. Also your memory is correct about his frame. I liked the trade, but it was hard to figure out where he was going to play, if he did fill out too much.

As a side note, I stand corrected that no one of significance on this forum didn't like the trade. I don't think SilenceS was even a half-mod at the time though. :D

Curious if anyone heard the same on the ESPN feed last night?

https://twitter.com/BestFansStLouis

I didn't hear anything and I heard things said and boo's but I never caught a derogatory word. He didn't say anything after the game and actually made jokes about them giving it to him. The Harper thing was weird doe. I just assumed ESPN has decided to make Harper the face of baseball and are pushing him hard.

ESPN is riding Harper's pud really hard. "Best fans in baseball". LOL. These idiots feel bitter about a player leaving after only 1 year with their lousy, declining organization.

I've been saying, I would not be surprised if 10 years from now we look back on this group and view Addison Russell as the best of the bunch. Rizzo has turned into a great player and while Bryant will never reach the Trout/Harper stratosphere -- I think he'll be great, too. But Russell is a major stud defensively, a supreme athlete, and at his age -- I truly think he might develop into the best of the bunch.

Wow St Louis has some trashy fans. I can't imagine why Heyward wanted to bail from that trailer park of a Stadium to a world class city like Chicago? Better city, better/younger players, better manager, and less trashy trailer park jorts-wearing fans.

When we reach the Holy Grail, we should line a parade route from Wrigley through St. Louis.

Bryant will never hit for average like Harper and Trout can, but he's got better raw power than both of them. For a guy who can hit a 500ft home run, his upper body is shockingly underdeveloped. He's going to become a juggernaut as he grows into his frame over the next several years.

I can ride cards fans a lot for their homerism and arrigance. But on the trashy meter, as a group, they're pretty low (not trashy).
