I'm a little surprised Joe let him pitch the 9th, but damn Jake, what a way to get your 20th win..... going the distance with a shutout! And dropping that ERA to 1.88!!! Freakin awesome!

Cubs Win!

The best thing about Jake is that he's old school....100 pitches is just a number to him. He'll throw as many as he needs to throw to get the job done. The guy's jersey should say "YOUNG" on the back.

LOL. Cubs fans just aren't used to being in a playoff race.

Funny you should mention that because we were just discussing today how similar this Cubs team is to the Blackhawks team of around 2009 or so. No one knew that a year later they would be a champion but we knew it was coming...their core group of players were that good. The best thing is that the Cubs don't have to break up their core group because of salary cap restrictions like the Hawks did after 2010 season. This Cub team is good now and will continue to be good for a long time.

I agree, the Hawks pretty much set the standard for Chicago teams to follow, imo. Starts with ownership and management, and then coaching, and then building a core groups as you say. Cubs are there, and I think the Bears are next are next in a couple years with their new staff. Now which team isn't following suit?

After looking at who Colorado's pitching in the Pitt-Col game....we got it good here even Hammel and Hendricks are stars compared to who they send out there. Tonight the dynamic duo of Rusin and Germen...yes, yes the same two who had a cup of coffee with our Cubs, combined for 7 walks in the first 5 innings. May the Lord have mercy on the Rockies' soul.

Arrieta is a no doubt the cy young winner...

Only to Cub Fans. Right now it's Grienke followed by Kershaw Nationally. ANd it really should. For Jake to win it he needs the other two to have a blowout loss down the stretch.

Mlb network were talking about it yesterday and they ( cant remember which host ) feel Arrieta had a slight lead over greinke for it..

I posted this elsewhere but 2/10 of a run now separate them and they have a near statistical identical WHIP. Arrieta leads in K's. I think you can make a solid case for either one and if you really delve into the analytics you can make a serious case for Kershaw as well. I don't think this is a slam dunk nor should it be.

It's not a slam dunk, but throwing the no-no late in the season as he has should help his case.

Agreed. The second half performance, the no hitter and well just watching the guy pitch is enough to give Arrieta your vote. I also think there are some old school guys who will be swayed by the win total. When I said it wasn't a slam dunk I meant for any of them. How anyone can say that it absolutely and obviously goes to Greinke when 2/10 of a run separate them in ERA is beyond me. What if the season ends and it's 1/10 of a run and the other stats remain what they are more or less? Unfortunately knowing the baseball press I fear it goes to Greinke but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes to Jake.

I think it all depends on how deep the voters dig. If they dig, It's Kershaw. If they semi dig, It's Grienke. If they go with second half stats then I think it's Jake by a close vote. Extremely exciting.

I think there's a chance albeit small that the Cubs sweep the awards (MVP, ROY, CY, Manager). Not sure that has been done before.

Who wins the MVP if the Cubs sweep? What MVP candidate do the Cubs have outside of Arrieta who comes close to Harper?

The way I see it, given how close things are....how much would losing one of these guys actually hurt their team the most. Dodgers have two aces while losing one would hurt, it wouldn't be a disaster. If the Cubs had lost Jake around mid season or so...they'd be toast. He's carried his team into the playoffs on his back.

Unfortunately, I don't have a vote and with baseball's press constant love affair with the coast teams...I fear the worst.
