They said they were trying to compete in 2012. They will be competitive, but I dont expect them to be world beaters. A lot has to go right. Soler had a bad day. It happens. If it continues, then thats a problem. First game of the season. Nationally televised game and monster expectations. You can get caught up in the moment. The vets should be able to handle themselves, but their is a learning curve for young ones.
I'm not going off a ledge, Dad. Please quit posting as if that were happening. There is a big difference between 2012 and 2015. The Club has raised expectations, as well. "They will be competitive, but they won't be world beaters" sounds a lot like last year from mid-May on. If they want to be "competitive" some things that happened last night need to get fixed this month, and they will be better automatically without that POS umpire behind the plate. His crap zone played right into Wainwright's hands.

What an embarrassing first game thread of the year! I'm not sure what is worse, the Cubs fans that are ready to throw in the towel after one game, or the obvious Sox trolls trying to ruin the thread?

It's one game people. Wainwright pitched better than Lester and the Cards got a couple good hits with runners on base. That was the difference in the game.

It's pathetic that some Cubs trash their own team so quickly, it's pathetic that some Mods are the biggest offenders, and it's pathetic that the Mods allow the obvious trolls to absolutely ruin the thread.

For once, I wasn't referring to you.

If you're referring to me, I'd really love for you to point out where I shat on the team.

And who 'ruined' the thread? JimJohnson? Put him on ignore.

Can't wait to watch the Red Sox give Samardzija 6 years, $138 million.

Thank you!!

I certainly believe everyone is entitled to their opinion. And I don't ask to have someone silenced for having an opinion I may not agree with.

But when someone posts on a game thread with the sole intention of ruining it for people trying to actually discuss the game, a mod should actually do something. I don't understand what pleasure some idiot gets from posting just to ruin a discussion, but it's awful damn pathetic.

I get that JimJohnson should get a permaban from this site. He's an awful poster, but...please tell me what went right last night? It's only one game and I'm guessing that Soler will perform a lot better in RF than he did. There were a lot of opening night jitters. Lester/Ross? Lester was unimpressive and if a LHP can't hold baserunners on, there is no reason to be a LHP. He'd better figure that out quick. Rizzo? The Plate Umpire was garbage last night, but when you get a guy to 3B, it's his job to get him in and he wanted to walk on pitches close to the plate instead. I expect the Cubs to take this series, but Opening Night was a big disappointment.

What went right? Well, the bullpen was outstanding. Ross' D looked good.

Lulz.. you're going to judge the bullpen in a no pressure situation? Let's see how they do in a tie game or up 1 run before you start creaming your panties.

They didn't look trolling to me.

I think most of us Cubs fans are just really wound up. After watching Theo purposefully tank season after season, there was hope that there'd be a change.

There wasn't.

Last night was not the light at the end of the tunnel moment we've all been waiting for.

Bats still sucked. Our "ace" was out matched by far by the other teams starting pitcher. The defense was still making dumb errors. And to boot, Wrigley looked like complete crap. Almost embarrassing...

No. No one I know is expecting to the Cubs to win the division - or even make the playoffs. But, we all expected better - and once again - were let down.

Then we look across town and see a team who doesn't purposefully tank - who on paper - has a better team than the Cubs do this year. And we realize that most of our hopes are stuck in the minors because our GM would rather throw a few more games to start the season than have to negotiate with his stars in a few years. And one of those "hopes" strikes out more than he makes contact. And another one is mouthing off to the media about why he's already disappointed with the team.

That's why Cubs fans were so sensitive.

Dude, it's one fucking game into a 162 game season. You guys overreact like a motherfucker. They'll probably end up winning 78-83 games. A 3-0 loss to the division winner 200 out of the last 205 years, or whatever the **** it is, isn't the worst thing in the world.

The bullpen can't score runs. I would hope Ross' D looked good after hitting .184 last season.

Zero runs. Rizzo 0/3. Where is Bryant again?

And the bathroom fiasco is totally in line with the Ricketts tenure as owners.

1 game........

Back at them game 2.

I'm not really concerned because:

1. Lester was not running at 100% this spring.
2. The line up is not complete until Bryant is on the team.

Now the thing that did concern me was that they got the lead off on base a few times but Adam was able to shut down the team after. Yes you have to tip your cap to him but still shutting down the O 100% of the time is something the Cubs need to work on. They have to aviod waiting on the big hit and start working on creating runs.

I like the Cubs with Arrieta on the mound assuming the game gets in.

Hell I hate to see the reaction of the WS favorite Nats fans after losing game 1 of the season if their anything like some of you.. their probably asking for scherzer elease.. calling him a horrible signing... SMH

Actually, Nats fans have been pretty sane considering their 7/210mil pitcher just lost to Bartolo Colon thanks to a shoddy defense and a lack of hitting. Hey, that kind of sounds familiar...

If anyone thinks that Bryant would have made the Cubs win Sunday night, he wouldn't have. Get over it.

No one was hitting the ball out of the park, and Bryant's defense at 3B is worse than Olt's.

Get off the one-man-show theory people. They didn't play well as a team and the Cardinals did, and they also did everything right.

It is 162 game season.

BTW, the Cubs in 07' lost on opening day and actually lost 6 of the first 10 games.

In 08' the Cubs also lost opening day, 3 of the first 4 before putting a win streak together to go 6-4 over the first 10 games.

15 teams won, and 15 lost. It is a long grind of a season, and if anyone is pissed that their respective teams didn't win opening day and are already panicking, they need to pick up a hobby like crocheting or needlepoint.

Probably because they understand there still 161 games left to play and Scherzer will win alot more then he loses for them in his starts...

Cubs could still lose 80 more games and reach their realistic goal for the year and be a .500 team...
