The Castro-Soler argument is getting really interesting?

Not even an argument until Soler is out there making an argument in his favor.
What? One of them we all suspect will get traded. It's interesting.

Oh for shit's sake! Pump the brakes!

Castro is having a great day, and his hitting has been enough lately to offset his fielding most days. But he has killed us for years, and has been hot with the bat for a month.

We can not start getting foolled into trading away an OF to keep castro in the middle infield. That would be insane. He is not good enough defensively. Period.

On the contrary, he is allowing the Cubs to not trade him at his lowest. Don't miss the opportunity!

The Cardinals are into that stuff. It's pretty lame.

Yeah, that's why I said that. They've always done that. What I like is Maddon is too classy for that shit. He'd rather show it on the scoreboard. Like today!

If trading Castro gets us another TOR pitcher, I'm for it. But like I said, I won't be mad if we keep him. However, if we do trade him, yes, he has really reestablished good trade value, which is awesome!

I'd roll with this same roster going into next year. In my perfect World, I'd add a LF (someone like Martel), another TOR pitcher, a 2ndary pitcher for the end of the rotation, and another closer. Then I think the Cubs are a 100 win team, and that's with a 162 game schedule!

While it's likely Starlin gets traded this off-season, I really want to see him get his 1,000th hit wearing a Cubs uniform.

I used to like those individual achievements when I was a kid.

Now I want a winning team.

If he is traded, i will root for him to get to 3000. But it wont be a mistake to go a different direction.

Yeah in regards to next year, I hope they sign a TOR guy, and then trade a combo of Hendricks+Castro/Soler to add a legit MOR arm. Someone like Ross

Look no further than their moron of a manager. I guess he's having a bit of a problem dealing with the the fact that horseshoe up his ass went missing.

I will say this though, that shot to the head of Holiday was pretty damn nasty.

I'd say he's not quite there yet. While his velocity was 93-94 which is a good sized boost from 89-90 he was doing early on...I didn't think his control was as good. It wasn't like he was walking guys but his in the strike zone control looked off...probably rust more than anything else.

The Cubs should be in no hurry to trade anyone, unless they get full value for them. The only reason I'd see them trading Castro over Soler is that Catro's second half (.280/.301/.429) is a decent enough six weeks that the Cubs could potentially get a team to think that Castro is going to hit enough in the MIF that the glove won't kill them. Soler on the other hand is struggling and teams are going to buy low and the Cubs aren't trading a 23 year old OF who could easily still be a middle of the order impact bat.

In case you guys forget, Rizzo watched his average drop to .233 when he was adjusting his swing patience (his walk rate went from 7 to 11%) and Soler is the same age, has four more years of cheap control, and has a stretch of baseball (last year) that rivals the best hitters in the game. Soler has raked at every stage and battled injuries+emotional outbursts so people trading him in the first bad stretch is too soon a judgement.

Be patient. Give it one more year with a lot of the questions on the roster because it's still early on almost all these guys. And enjoy days like today where the magic number is cut to 8.

All I said it is not an argument until Soler starts playing.

It takes 2 performing to have a real argument. Not one sitting and the other playing.

UZR150:
3B:
Bryant: 3.5
Baez: 73.3...ok 35 innings but still.

2B:
Baez: -11.7
Castro: -4.6

RF:
Soler: -14.0
Bryant: 13.5

Not enough data really to make an honest opinion. From what little we have Baez has performed positive value at 3B and negative value at 2B. Sill little data to go on.
Castro is at a dislike value also but not to the same degree at 2B.

Bryant's value is higher in RF over 3B. Sure there is less data to work with but we are talking 3.5 up to 13.5 value.

Soler has negative value with a ton of data to work with.

That is just data talking. Sure they are young and we expect them to improve. but with raw numbers it shows that a D set up of Baez at 3B, Castro at 2B and Bryant at RF would have a stronger D value to the other way.

Now the biggest reason that I see in the arguement for Soler is in his potential. Byt that is his biggest selling point also. Castro is a know factor and his value has been established. Soler has that question going on which makes him more valuable in a deal. A team would be gambling that he reaches his potential in trading for him vs knowing what Castro's value is. Basically what Beene did with Russell.

I disagree because both of them could perform. Until Soler went down, his eye at the plate from Spring Training was back. One could beat out the other and the winner could get traded as part of a package for a young TOR. None of us ha e control over the FO and each plays a different position. Different teams have different needs, blah, blah, blah. It isn't really an "argument". It is however an interesting discussion. Obviously YMMV.
