All offenses are streaky. It the nature of hitting. The key is OBP where the Cubs are tied for 2nd with the Pirates. If you're on base all the time you will score more often than not even when the bats are cold. That and having a variety of guys that can get hot at different times.

Sometime you have to put it on the pitcher. Not really on the line up. Most guys will hit mistakes. A slumping hitter will foul off a mistake. A good pitcher will minimize his mistakes.

You look at teams going up against Arrieta and never put the blame on them slumping. You put it on Jake being that good. Goes both ways. Pitchers have those days that they don't make mistakes.

My opinion is early season the Cubs feasted on BB. That could be attested to early season pitcher adjustments. Now that a few months have past and pitchers are peaking I'm noticing that the BB are dropping. Which is affecting the run production.

Pretty basic stuff.

Absolutely. Great pitching beats good hitting which is why such an emphasis is put on a rotation in the playoffs. That said if you can get on base you give yourself a chance against good, if not great, pitching.

Walk rate isn't down that much (13.7% to 10.2%). Per game you're talking about a difference of about one extra baserunner.

The Cubs in may watched their HR rate plummet (31.3 PA in April, 36.8 PA in May) and they simply have been less efficient in scoring men who reach base.

In the month of April, the Cubs had 326 men reach base via H, BB, ROE, HBP and they scored 136 runs meaning they converted 41.7% of their base runners in to runs.

In the month of May, the Cubs had 390 men reach base via H, BB, ROE, HBP and they scored 139 runs meaning they converted 35.6% of their base runners in to runs.

Also the Cubs offense the past 14 days to combat recency bias (Note: days used for simplicity in getting the stats)
107 K on 442 PA (24.2 K rate)

Cubs offense previous to that
319 K on 1593 PA (19.2 K rate)

I noticed also that they have been more dependent on the HR

I think Russell leads the league in throwing his bat on accident when swinging.

Hendricks looks settled in today. 36 pitches through 3. Hopefully this is like his last start.

Ive talked about Russelll throwing his bat since he came up. He does it way more often then any other major leaguer. He has to do something about that

Bryant hits another warning track shot. Seems to be doing that a lot lately.

Fangraph's has some balls putting those two names in connection with each other but as a Hendricks fan I liked the article.

You can't argue facts. Opinions are debatable. Basically him and Shaw are doing the same thing regarding keeping his FB% to a min while a good chunk of them are pop ups. No one said that he didn't know how to pitch. If anything it shows his high IQ on getting easy outs.

I'm like 80% sure the LA broadcasters(I'mw atching online) keep calling Hendricks "Kyle Kendrick." For shame!

I agree with JD on watching Urias' poise out there even as he gets roughed up a little. I mean he's a teenager and that's damned impressive.
