Yeah how is it that there is this kind of judgment on a team where it seems like the majority of the actual tribe don't have a problem with it, but a team with the name "Redskins" is still around while there is plenty of criticism on it and doesn't show any signs of changing? That's like having a team called the New York Niggers.

Chris Rock is that you? I didn't know you liked hockey.

It is just a real shame that the school is changing its name. The logo is awesome, the team name sounds cool. I don't know how good the hockey program is but I do know Toews came out of UND so I liked it. Just a damn shame

The difference is that it is the NCAA versus the MLB, NFL, etc. You could guarantee major sponsorship issues if the pro teams starting going down this route

whereas the NCAA could give a rats ass. The have a point that they are making and nothing will stand in there way and challenging them is a total waste of

money and time. Just ask the U of I.

In today's world of academics and the loons who are professing, does it really surprise you the hard line PC crap that the NCAA is enforcing?

Hockey here is like football at schools like Michigan, Ohio State, etc. When we have a game the town stops what they're doing and focuses all attention towards the sioux, so you can imagine how attached to the nickname we feel.

If you want an idea of how good we are try this on for size. 7 national championships, 13 conference titles, 3 Frozen Fours in the last 5 years, and we've developed pros such as Jonathan Toews, TJ Oshie, Mike Commodore, Matt Greene, Ed Belfour, Jason Blake, Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, Drew Stafford, Troy Murray, and Dave Tippett. So yeah, hockey is a BIG deal up here and the program is considered by many of the NHL scouts to be a pro factory right now.

Wow I knew the school was good but not that damn good wow. Wish they televised more college hockey. There are a few schools I really like.

More twists and turns in the never ending saga of the Fighting Sioux nickname and moniker. North Dakota state legislature proposing bill to force the retention of the Sioux. Going to get some resistance however. Hopefully this last ditch effort works, and the true voices in this story can be heard.

Introduction

ND Attorney General on the bill

Reaction from Coaches and politicians

Actual Bills themselves if anyone is willing to bore themselves thoroughly: Draft 1 Draft 2 Draft 3

That would be awesome, but in the end unfortunately, all I see it doing is dragging it to federal appeals court.

Honestly I don't see this bill being overturned by anybody in this state and it could very well pass. The big obstacle is if the NCAA is willing to accept this as a settlement, even though it's not what they agreed on and it's past the NCAA's deadline of November 1st 2010

I guess their recourse would be that the NCAA is not a legal body? In that, while it may be their rules and organization, the do not override the law. It would be like a company telling everyone they couldn't wear red shirts, but then the state passed the law that they could only wear red shirts?

Another question, what percentage of faculty/staff and enrollment is Sioux or Native American?

I couldn't give you a number but theres not a ton of students here that are from the reservations directly but a lot of the people in the state have a sioux relative somewhere in their past

I was just wondering. Not that it matters much other than you know, whitey trying to steal something again or whatever... Mostly I was just wondering how represented they are withing the University, and how much support the University gives the Native American communities around it.

the school has a native American culture center and they plan festivities around the school to honor such traditions. Sioux Indians also are offered a lot of scholarship money and other financial aid that others are not

Interesting, it's good to know that they are actively involved in the community and it's not just about the name.

And it is they who should be the only ones involved in the decision. Whatever the Tribal Council says.....Goes.
